This game has turned into excellent entertainment. It's 2-2, both teams really need a win, everyone seems determined to score directly from corner kicks, it's wild.

That's a disaster for Ghana, but a win for the Comoros on a par with Iceland's defeat of England.

Not sure - England were decidedly ropy in 2016. Algeria/W Germany 1982, perhaps?

Albeit a greater performance in that it eliminated the opponent.

(Goals at the AfCON. Whatever next?)

This tournament keeps delivering these "surely this is _the_ upset of the tournament" moments.

Ghana feels like an African powerhouse, but I just found out that they haven't won AFCON in my lifetime.

This is very good news for Cabo Verde and Malawi, who now almost certainly advance to the next round. Comoros aren't chanceless either, but much will ride on Sierra Leone - Equatorial Guinea on Thursday.

A difference is that Iceland had already proven themselves to be quite competent in the group phase (unbeaten, scored in every game) before meeting England, while before today Comoros had never scored a goal at any AFCON.

It gets better. They recorded their first ever competitive win in 2016.

After South Africa were robbed of progress in the World Cup qualifiers by a bent ref in the deciding game against Ghana, and in absence of Bafana at the tournament (knocked out by Ghana and Ethiopia), South Africa's interest has pretty much focussed on hoping to see Ghana fail. Ghana to SA 2022 = France to Ireland 2010. We were all Comorans last night.

We weren't all anti France in 2010

Their nickname being 'Les Coelacanthes' is easily enough for me to support them for the remainder of the tournament.

Which, of course, may already have ended for them.

Today's group went according to form: both Nigeria and Egypt win, so the third-placed team in Group D ends up with only a single point. As a consequence, Cabo Verde and Malawi are both certain of qualification for the next round. Cabo Verde will take on Senegal, Malawi will play Morocco.

Tomorrow, the third-placed team from Group F will also qualify, unless really weird things happen (Tunisia must lose to Gambia by six or more goals, and even if they do, the results in Group E might still save them). If so, this third-placed team will take on Nigeria, and either Comoros or whoever ends third in Group E will meet Cameroon.

The last round in Group E, tomorrow at 5PM, ought to be good. Algeria will need to beat Cote d'Ivoire to get to the knockout phase; Cote d'Ivoire only need a point for that, but they will need a win to guarantee topping the group. The winner of Equatorial Guinea - Sierra Leone definitely advances, and a draw would see both of them through to the next round unless Algeria win. The winner of Group E will play Egypt next, while the runner-up will play the winner of Group F next, so there seems to be little difference there.

If some of these scores in Group E aren't overturned in the second half, Comoros will reach the knockout stage.

Can't figure out whether to conclude that Cote d'Ivoire must be favorites to win this tournament, or that Algeria are really bad.

Sierra Leone got the chance to save themselves with a penalty in the 85th minute, but the goalkeeper makes an excellent save.

I think the Comoros have just qualified for the last 16.

Gambia keeper saves a penalty too. Jaziri shot it really hard but not that far from the middle of the goal.

Ooh, handbags at halftime. A red card was shown. Looks like it went to a Tunisian substitute.

                                          Well, that ended delightfully.

It was a good goal too. I can see them beat Guinea and then take Cameroon to a penalty shootout, if they keep playing like this.

The success of Comoros has improved my geography of (i) the Indian Ocean, and (ii) French football. About 15 French clubs represented in the squad, more than any other Francophone nation, and I'm wondering if any other countries in FIFA have such a spread within one (not domestic) league.

The disputed penalty VAR'd to a free kick in the last few seconds of additional time was all a bit silly.
