    Summer signings 2021

I'll kick this off as Shrewsbury Town have announced the signing of Luke Leahy from Bristol Rovers on a 2 year deal. He's 28, a left back, and was captain there.

Salop released a lot of players so the rebuild needed to start early. I wasn't expecting it to be this early, though.

Sounds like someone is going to be signing Harry Kane. He says he wants to leave Spurs.

Joe Lumley signs a two year contract with Middlesborough. Nice bloke, probably still a decent keeper too, but Seny Dieng sealed the number 1 shirt this past season for QPR.

        Is his nickname Purdey?

'Fraid not. Just 'Lummers' which is seriously bland.

You'd think it would be Patsy at least!

I agree it's a bit of an open goal. Maybe 'Boro fans will have more imagination than our lot.

Sam Field makes his loan permanent. This is very good news, he's exactly the type of skilled, solid DM we've been missing, probably since Shaun Derry's time. Along with Jordy de Wijs we've signed two of the four loanees that made such a difference to our post-Christmas results. Austin and Johansen to follow with luck.

Back in the 1976, Ipswich bought our player of the season, a forward who went on to score thirteen times for England, and is widely regarded as one of our greatest ever. Now we've nabbed James Wilson, their award winner from last season, though I'm not sure he'll feature in any of their best ever lists.

Hope so. Colin got rid of two 'keepers and replaced them with worse over the past season.

Ashley Fletcher, whom many Boro supporters consider 'League One at best' looks like he's heading for the Premier League with Watford.

Wilson only played 18 games last season and was Supporters Player of the Season a little bit by accident because everyone else was so terrible. But, for a player who joined the club as an emergency stopgap two years ago, he did a decent enough job. I'd have been happy for him to stay, but Cook seems to want to ditch the whole squad.

Huddersfield's scattergun approach to recruitment has led to them resigning Jordan Rhodes, and giving him a three year deal at the age of 31 which seems unnecessarily long for a player with no resale value. They've given a contract of the same length to Luton's Matty Pearson which seems a bit more sensible.

They've resigned themselves to re-signing Jordan Rhodes.

The Sheffield Star notes that Rhodes' final Wednesday goal tally of 20 can be divided neatly into his transfer fee of 8m - 400k per goal. Because that's how it works.

He did well for them in League One all those years ago, and he was even better for Blackburn, but it would be a surprise if he were to suddenly get back to that level on his return to Huddersfield. Although he might get back to League One level soon enough.

Meanwhile, Man City's answer to Jordan Rhodes, Sergio Aguero, looks set for Barcelona, with Memphis Depay reportedly also being lined up.

Which reveals something of the state of Barca's finances in terms of transfer budget. They're looking in the markdown fridge for some quality meat which hasn't quite gone off yet, rather than ordering from their usual gourmet butchers.

If Aguero is the expired ham, are Garcia, Memphis and Wijnaldum the 5lb... (sniff, sniff) OK, 10lb of "frozen" shrimp?

Celtic have seemingly signed Scunthorpe United's Joey Dawson, a striker who has just turned 18 and who is the son of "club legend" Andy Dawson.
Derby and Arsenal were also reportedly in the chase.
He had one EFL sub appearance, and had not signed a professional contract so in theory Celtic don't have to pay us a penny, but the understanding is they will shove some compo our way.

Did very well for the U18s last year, but you'd think he'd have got a sniff of the struggling first team if he was that good.

As an exasperated Celtic-supporting friend asked, "Is Joey to be the manager or Director of Football?".

Scunthorpe's brightest young hope, John McAtee, has turned down his contract and will instead sign for... Grimsby.
He couldn't wait another year for National League football, I guess.
                                                  Compensation yet to be agreed.
