Cuca has perfected the guy you see smoking outside a Jersey diner at 3:30 in the morning look

Jersey diner, Veterans Stadium jail, Ironbound stripclub, Brighton Beach bouncer, Elvis Memphis Mafia bodyguard, 1-hour motel manager, truck driver picking up and dropping off the new Port-o-Johns, Chechnyan warlord watching UFC in Vegas, frantically speed-walking through an Atlantic City casino wondering what other lines of credit he has to max out at 3:30 in the morning look....

River really don't have the defenders to play a high line, and need to start thinking about who's going to be their goalkeeper in 2022 now. Presumably we'll now finally get to see them take a league campaign seriously under Gallardo, though (since they went out of the Copa Argentina to Boca a couple of weeks ago).

Boca themselves are hardly doing that well this season...

Boca are doing awfully, and have just sacked their manager, but I was commenting in the light of River having had their arses handed to them in the Libertadores a few hours ago. In the seven years since Gallardo took charge River have been judging themselves by higher standards than that.

Barcelona (Guyaquil) are non-Brazil's only remaining hope for a semi-finalist.

                Indeed they are.

This is the first edition since 2014 (which they didn't play in, and which was the last edition before Gallardo took over in the middle of that year) in which River aren't in the semis, incidentally.

Stunning goals by Zaracho and Hulk in the Atlético win. The semi-final against Palmeiras, like last year's final, will be a match-up between Abel Ferreira and Cuca.

Also Atlético have just signed Diego Costa. He presumably won't be eligible for Libertadores matches but I wouldn't fancy being a Brazilian club centre-back facing him and Hulk.

I'd say the chances of a Brazilian semi-final clean sweep are fairly low. Barcelona have been impressive, Fluminense are in poor form and 2-2 is a great away result for Barcelona in a competition where away goals still count double.

I was right about Fluminense. A 1-1 draw means the Fla-Flu semi won't happen.

I was wrong about Diego Costa. He is eligible for the semifinal. Not sure how they'll fit him in the team though.

A strong performance from Brazilians in the Sudamericana as well with Athletico-PR in the semis and Bragantino likely to join them, though Santos were eliminated by Libertad.

Without anyone seeming to notice, the semi-finals are in progress.

Palmeiras and Atlético played out a predictably turgid 0-0 draw, the only incident worthy of note being a penalty miss by Hulk but Atlético should finish the job in the second leg. Incidentally, if you were a centre half, is there a pair of strikers you'd less like to face than Hulk and Diego Costa (especially if they were each 10 years younger)?

Another European refugee, David Luiz, made his debut for Flamengo against Barcelona. Two Bruno Henrique goals gave them what looks like an adequate lead but they had Diego Alves to thank for a couple of smart saves so the job is not yet finished.

In the Sul-Americana, Bragantino, without their star man Claudinho, transferred to Zenit, took a two goal lead against Libertad and with Athletico Paranaense facing Penarol tonight, the prospect of another all-Brazilian final looms.

Palmeiras made it to the final on away goals with a 1-1 draw at Atlético. Their equaliser was slightly controversial as some of Palmeiras' subs had encroached on to the pitch before Dudu had put the ball in the net but any possible appeal from Atlético on those grounds isn't going anywhere.

They were joined by Flamengo with another 2-0 win against Barcelona and another two goals for Bruno Henrique. So a final between the last two champions.

It also looks like an all-Brazilian final in the Sudamericana as Bragantino comfortably overcame Libertad and they will probably face Athletico Paranaense who defend a 2-1 lead at home to Penarol tonight.

Oh FFS. Conmebol is asking IFAB for permission to have a 25 minute half-time in the Libertadores final so they can mount a Superbowl-style show. They say it will improve the spectacle because the players will have more time to recover.

So the tv show I helped create/write/produce made it to the Rio Webfest. Our episode is scheduled to show at 6pm Rio time this Saturday, November 27.

Can't wait for the packed house! Thank God nothing else will be going on this Saturday at that time that people in Rio care about!

About time this thread was resurrected with the final on Saturday.

It may have escaped peoples' attention but the final of the Sul Americana was on Saturday. It was an all-Brazilian affair between two clubs - Athletico Paranaense and Red Bull Bragantino - from outside the traditional 'Big 12'. (Three of those big 12 clubs - Botafogo, Vasco and Cruzeiro - have spent this season in Série B and Grêmio are in serious danger of relegation.

Anyway, Athletico followed up their 2018 title by winning it with an excellent strike from Nikão.

Bom, se ainda me lembro, comemoram no Leblon, onde tinha um bar chamado Clipper, q não sei se ainda existe, e também se comemora no Baixo Gávea.
                                    São dois locais q lembro.

Baixo Gávea is an excellent choice. Plenty of great bars and it will be absolutely packed. It's the traditional place for celebration as it's close to the Flamengo HQ which is in Gávea.

Bar Clipper was still open when I was last there two years ago.

Which part of Rio are you staying in?

The Museu do Flamengo is at the Flamengo HQ in Gávea close to where you'll be celebrating/commiserating.

It's also right next to the big lake, Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, which is well worth a visit - though maybe not so much if it's still raining.

I'll hope Palmeiras wins, because if a friggin’ weed-wackier/string-trimmer/strimmer can wake me up at 2am when I have to be up at 5am to catch my flight tomorrow, I’ll have no chance against thousands of honking cars on Av Lucio Costa.

However, if I can’t beat em I’ll certainly join em. It was cool they rented 3 planes that each flew a “Vencer” banner over the beach Jersey Shore style so it said “Vencer-vencer-vencer.”

I’ll hope I see the single greatest street juggler I ever saw outside of the Flamenco stadium/museum at the light of Raul Machado-Mario Ribero last night.

In the rain, he was already one of the best jugglers I’ve seen….only he climbed up on 5 milk crates and was about 2 metres in the air towering above the cars.

My show is screening at 6. Just hoping I don’t come out to see 0-0 at the half. Hope it’s a VARless win for either team.
