The group stage was planned to get going yesterday, but already covid is playing a part, as Kaizer Chiefs were told not to travel from Soweto to Casablanca to play Wydad. Al-Ahly's first game in defence of their title against Al Merrikh from Omdurman was also delayed, as they have been given time to get over their efforts last week in Qatar.
As well as Kaizer Chiefs, a few other famous old names of sub-Saharan football are back in the group stage this year, including Horoya Conakry, Simba from Dar-es-Salaam and Vita Club from Kinshasa. The big north African sides have had it almost all their own way for a few years now, so for variety it would be nice to see a couple of semi-finalists not from Cairo, Casablanca or Tunis.
