... is not enough for an offence of offside to be committed. Under the current rules a player actually needs to get close to the ball and try to play it to commit a foul for offside. Or a few other things, like obstruct the vision of an opponent of the ball. Being in a beneficial position being enough for an offence hasn’t been part of the rules for donkey’s years (cf. Ruud van Nistlerooy, Netherlands vs Czech Rep, 2006).

This is the same reason why flags go up ‘very late’ even for very clear offsides - the assistant ref has to wait for the forward to actually play at the ball before it’s a foul.

This is the official statement: 'A player in an offside position receiving the ball from an opponent who deliberately plays the ball, including by deliberate handball, is not considered to have gained an advantage, unless it was a deliberate save by any opponent.'

To me, that would cover a situation where for example a player passes back to his goalkeeper, unaware of a forward lurking in an offside position; it's always been the case that a player can't be offside if the ball is played by an opponent. It doesn't say that the offside player can tackle the defender before he has the ball under control, nor that he can do so from behind without returning to an onside position at any point during the passage of play. It's ludicrous to suggest in this instance that Rodri didn't gain an advantage.
