Of course, both Chelsea and Man City could both storm into contention in the New Year, but it seems the clubs presently best placed to challenge Liverpool for the 2020-21 title will all be participating in the Europa League this spring (Leicester, Man United, Tottenham). Of course, that raises the question as to whether they should concentrate on the continent's secondary competition, and risk falling between two stools, or sacrifice that trophy for a shot at national honours?

Where's the "try to avoid relegation from the second division" option?

The “trying to avoid relegation” might be an appropriate option for Arsenal the way things are going for them.

It's simple maths. You have seven or eight realistic contenders for CL places via the EPL route so you'd be draft not to keep the EL as an option. Obvious example: Spurs are suddenly not in the CL slots despite looking nailed on a week ago.

Additionally, the reason you're in the EL in the first place is because you're inconsistent (i.e. you're not Liverpool or Man City).

I'm also not seeing any club "placed" to challenge Liverpool at present. It's not happened in the last 18 months and it's not happening now.
