Walton & Hersham 3 Meridian VP 1
FA Vase, First Round Qualifying
I managed to drag two mates out for some Saturday night football, one of whom was seeing his first game since February. Another healthy crowd of around 200 was a good sign as The Swans rebuild from a wretched few years which has seen them relocate to a newt if soulless groundshare and suffer multiple relegations to the tenth tier.
They are now owned and run by a group of seven graduates in their early twenties with local football connections who certainly seem to be freshening up the club. They're playing really neat, progressive football and have signed local legend Jamie Byatt (with Corinthian Casuals for most of his career) who is still scoring shedloads of goals in what must be his late thirties.
They cruised to a three-nil lead by the hour mark despite missing a penalty but then gave Meridian a hint of hope by suffering a red card for an off the ball incident of retaliation and giving a goal away by overplaying at the back with the keeper missing a back pass to present an empty net to the opposing forward. That caused a bit of nerves but they saw the rest of the game out.
