It ended one nil to atleti.

Yes but they still lie second in the table behind the new and improved Real Sociedad. It would be nice to think that a genuine outsider could win La Liga for once, but I wouldn't bank on it.

Real Sociedad show a grittier side of their nature with a 1-0 away win against a tough Cadiz team standing fifth in the table. Impressive.

quite the bizarre winning goal. not a great week for the goalkeepers of the big two.

I was having a discussion with Garcia about what ter stegen did and he was calling him a goalkeeping idiot like ederson, whereas I was leaning more towards thinking that he has to come charging out to sweep behind his high line four or five times a game. It's clearly an important part of the way that they play, but it's a real highwire act, because it's tricky to get right, and no-one notices or gives you credit for the 99 times you get it right, because the one time you get it wrong is so spectacularly hilarious.

What is the spanish view on such issues, or the German view, because you can easily find compilation videos of basically every german goalkeeper getting caught out doing this sort of thing. Is it treated as kind of part of the modern game, or is it seen as evidence of an unforgivable flaw in a goalkeeper to get it wrong even once?

In Segunda Division, Rayo Vallecano go back in the play off places with a win at Real Zaragoza, a club whose current struggles give me no pleasure.

A good 2-0 win by Eibar at Real Betis last night sees them jump over their vanquished opponents in the table. Betis have now lost six of their last eight matches and are in freefall. They've shipped 11 goals in their last three games too.

A 17-year-old Irish player called John Joe Patrick Finn made his debut last night for Getafe - born in Madrid, with a dad from Mayo and a mom from Cameroon, so the FAI would want to secure his status fairly rapidly.

I don't think I've ever seen a triple forename before.

Could even be, heh, four forenames, I suppose.

                          Continental royals specialise in this.

The current Bourbon pretender is Luis Alfonso Gonzalo V?ctor Manuel Marco de Borb?n y Mart?nez-Bordi?

Berba could tell you all about the Connemara tradition here, where men will frequently be known by names going back three generations, so "Paddy Tom Pats" will have the first name Paddy, the middle name Tom after his father, and his grandfather was the Pats in the question, similar to the Russian patronymic.

John Joseph may look like two separate words but it is in fact only one forename

Slightly disappointing result for Real Sociedad being held to a goalless draw at Alaves who had a player sent off on the hour mark. They need to win games like this to challenge Atleti. Having said that David Silva and Mikel Oryazabal, who gave been excellent this season, were both missing for Sociedad.

First win of the season for Huesca, at home to Alaves, making it tight at the bottom.

Half time it's Real Madrid 1 Atletico Madrid 0. Real Madrid have had one of their better halves this season, helped by Atleti who haven't been anywhere near their usual selves. Simeone has made three changes at half time.

Simeone makes a fourth change. Joao Felix is off - he's not happy at all, justifiably. Saul comes on and gets booked within seconds. 2-0 Carvajal.

Fifth change from Simeone and he finally hooks Suarez, who should have been the first player off. He's been a pedestrian all game.

Real Sociedad involved in their sixth draw on the run in all competitions which could be seen as a hiccup, particularly as two of them were at home in the league against teams they might have been expected to beat. I'd like them to challenge this season and for that home wins are vital, but it's always difficult to deny lovable, battling little Eibar a share of the points.

Yes, every point in vital for Eibar this season, and every season. But Sociedad will see this as two very valuable points dropped in this derbi.

Half time at the Nou Camp and Levante are holding their own against Barca, with a typically good performance from their keeper - Aitor Fernandez. It's 0-0.

It ends 1-0 to Barcelona, who move up to 7th. There are midweek games for the next two weeks in La Liga. The key one this week will be Barca at home to Real Sociedad on Wednesday

Real Madrid were the only team in the top 4 to win this weekend. After beating Sevilla away last week, unbelievably finishing top of their Champions League group midweek and then beating Atleti in the derbi this weekend, I think we can confidently say Zidane's job is now safe for the moment. He's been helped inordinately by the return of some key players this week - Ramos, Casemiro, Carvajal, Benzema and, for the last few minutes last night, Fede Valverde.

May I gently correct a small mistake? It's not "the Balaidos" but simply "el estadio de Balaidos" or simply "Balaidos". Similarly, Mestalla isn't proceeded by the definite article.
