I actually owned the 94 one as I didn't mind it at all and it is very much of its time, which I think is a good thing, but when it is put up against such strong contenders it looks pretty poor.

Yeah, this. I understand the need for innovation, and sometimes (like with Holland's Euro 88 kit) a change is found that fits the mood and styles of the moment - the shift from wing collars to turtlenecks here, from 62 to 70, for example. So maybe splashing Umbro and Nike swishes and flashes on Brazil's kits was a necessary evil that reflects the modern game. But no, not for me.

A couple decades and some change before.

The 1990 final was very dire, however I watched the final in a pub in Wurzburg and that gave the game extra atmosphere and the post-final celebrations were exciting to experience. Four years later I could have cared less about Brazil or Italy, as Bulgaria and Sweden would have been a dream underdog final matchup.

God forbid I should ever have to watch the 'highlights' of either final again, but am I right in thinking that the 1990 penalty was a very soft decision? At the time I was sinking into a semi-comatose state, so I could be wrong.

It was a very soft decision, it seemed the ref was looking for ANYTHING to avoid the game going to extra time. I haven't re-watched either final, that is for sure.
