Warm balls at the CAF - 2019-20 African Champions League

Looking forward to the quarter finals this weekend, after the drama and ultimate chaos of last year's tournament.

The quarter final draw kept apart the warring protagonists from last year's abandoned final, Esperance Tunis and Wydad Casablanca. Wydad do go back to Tunisia to face Etoile de Sahel, while Esperance face Cairo's Zamalek. Cairo's other giant Al-Ahly play Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa while Tout Puissant from Congo play Raja Casablanca in the last quarter-final, so at this stage the draw opens up the possibility of three different national derbies in the final. All eight teams are former continental champions so it's quite the heavyweight lineup.

All four quarter-final first legs ended in two goal home wins, with Raja, Wydad and Al-Ahly winning 2-0. The most drama came in Cairo as Zamalek came from behind to beat champions Esperance 3-1. Highlights (with some marvellously Partridgesque English commentary) here.

    Second legs are next weekend.

The Tout Puissant club crest is a thing of beauty.

I've love for that football munching croc to be named Engelbert but I fear it's actually something else.

No second leg turnarounds, so both semi-finals will be Cairo v Casablanca. Best of the thrills came in a packed stadium in Lubumbashi, where TP threw everything at Raja but just couldn't get that second goal, even from the spot.

          Highlights here.

First of the semi-final first legs last night in Casablanca, after a seven month delay, and it was first blood to Cairo, as Al-Ahly won an open game 2-0. Great double save from a penalty near the end of the first half was a key moment.

Tonight Raja play Zamalek in the same stadium, before next weekend the four teams play both second legs in Cairo. The CAF have announced that if either Egyptian team reaches the final that will be in Cairo too.
