Mick Channon (horse racing) and David Beckham (modelling?) are names that spring to mind who may have earned more from activities that are unconnected to football than they did as top flight players. Are there any other examples among players who have retired since, say, 1980?

Mick Channon's Man City team mate Ray Ranson made a fortune in insurance and venture capitalisting after retiring, and has since made multiple forays into football, usually in the sort of deal or proposed deal that features closely to the words "everything that is wrong with the modern game".

Chopper Harris used to run a newsagent when he was still playing, I believe, but I think he bought and sold a golf course after retiring which made him a packet.
Micky Droy used to run a electricals shop in Kensal Green and invest in property in Florida which, again, proved rather profitable.

While Forbes' assessment of Mathieu Flamini's wealth seems somewhat off the mark, I don't doubt that he's made a pretty penny from his co-ownership of a biochemical company.

1990's York City legend Andy McMillan is now MD of a bio-decontamination firm, in which capacity he appears to be one of the only people currently excited about the coronavirus. Not sure if that will have yet outstripped 12 years at right back in the lower leagues earnings-wise though.
