Most Recent Top Flight Players Who Earned More Money Outside The Game

Mick Channon (horse racing) and David Beckham (modelling?) are names that spring to mind who may have earned more from activities that are unconnected to football than they did as top flight players. Are there any other examples among players who have retired since, say, 1980?

    Robbie Fowler?

Would the various pundits count as "outside the game"? Lineker, Shearer, Hansen et al must surely earn more than they ever did on the pitch.

Shearer was earning £50k a week in 1996, and a substantial chunk of that at blackburn. He also was at newcastle for a very long time.

Lineker and hansen definitely made more after the game. as has anyone who became a manager.

Mick Channon's Man City team mate Ray Ranson made a fortune in insurance and venture capitalisting after retiring, and has since made multiple forays into football, usually in the sort of deal or proposed deal that features closely to the words "everything that is wrong with the modern game".

Mickey Quinn finished before the really silly money kicked in, so must have earnt more as a horse trainer/occasional celebrity dieter?

David Icke retired from the game before SD's cut off date so misses out the mad bastard.

Espen Baardsen went into hedge funds. May or May not have actually made money at it though.

Francis Lee, of course, made his pile in bog roll.

John Carew invested a lot of his earnings in property, I think it has paid off well.

I wonder how Eric Cantona's post-game earnings stack up against his career earnings? Only on about £5000 a week at one point in the 90s.

Vinny Jones acting career must have dwarfed his football earnings.

Chopper Harris used to run a newsagent when he was still playing, I believe, but I think he bought and sold a golf course after retiring which made him a packet.

Micky Droy used to run a electricals shop in Kensal Green and invest in property in Florida which, again, proved rather profitable.

While Forbes' assessment of Mathieu Flamini's wealth seems somewhat off the mark, I don't doubt that he's made a pretty penny from his co-ownership of a biochemical company.

Flamini has a 50% stake in a company that produces environmentally friendly bio-fuels and the like. Forbes had him pegged down as being worth $14billion.

I can't pretend to know the first thing about monetising Instagram, but Ronnie must be on 10-20 million basic annually from Juve (and another huge amount in bonuses and purely football related endorsements). Can he be making more that than from Instagram alone?

1990's York City legend Andy McMillan is now MD of a bio-decontamination firm, in which capacity he appears to be one of the only people currently excited about the coronavirus. Not sure if that will have yet outstripped 12 years at right back in the lower leagues earnings-wise though.
