    Own goals

Who decides if a goal is deflected or if it was a bona fide own goal? I ask because for all my best attempts to wish it so Messi's first goal last night surely wouldn't have gone in if it hadn't been for the Leganes' players foot. And there must be loads of other examples. Sorry, not the best link (second repetition the best view):

The referee is responsible for deciding, though it is worth noting that there is nothing in the Laws to that effect

This piece from FIFA is interesting

I don't think the Messi one is too controversial, he's had a shot which is probably on target. The keeper has clearly dived in an attempt to save it. It's a big deflection, undoubtedly, but Messi's goal for me. I'm generally of the opinion that if there's a doubt give it to the attacker unless it's a blatantly obvious OG- what striker doesn't want a goal credited to them, and what defender does want an OG?

I've always wanted to be on a dubious goals committee.

Sounds like a key component of Brexit strategy

I think that's been declared an own goal without having to bother the committee for a decision

I distinctly remember Jimmy Greaves commenting on a wildly deflected goal that was attributed to England player at a WC (maybe Trevor Francis?) and stating something to the effect of "I would like my career goals record to be officially raised to 500".
