As one of my Olimpistas snarked, "Al fin Cerro have historia, campeonato modo de Covid!"
Francisco Arce - https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francisco_Arce - simply took these young dummies who like to run and taught them that '98 Paraguay defense that almost took France to penalties and put Diego Churin in to score the 1 goal in a string of about 5 or 6 one-nil wins. Poor Nelson Haedo came on at the end, didn't get passed to on a 3 on 1, and stood to the side during all the ceremonies. I guess he knows that's the end at Cerro at least.
Churin has had an absolutely bizarre career. Bouncing around with Independiente and other clubs in Argentina in his early 20s, starting to score on those mid-table sides in Chile for a few years, then playing second fiddle to Nelson Haedo for 2 years before winning the title this year. His goals go up every year. I wonder if he'll get another shot in Argentina or somewhere else at age 30. A bit of a Jamie Vardy late-bloomer thing going on.
Thank GAWD we have a 4-day weekend, because gunshots and bombs and fireworks are going on all over the place...and I live in an Olimpia neighborhood.
On a side note....Olimpia wins 4-2 but misses maybe one of the greatest sitters of all sitters. The ball was crossed and literally was 1 inch off the line on the ground. Brian Montenegro somehow timed it wrong and put his foot on top of the ball as it was on the line, rolling his foot over the ball and poking it off the line with his heel as he ended up on his ass. It's a masterpiece.
I guess that this kind of thing can happen once Leoz is no longer on the Executive Committee
The TAS/CAS is the arbitral tribunal in Lausanne that issued the final ruling in the Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain FFP cases, along with dozens of others across a wide range of sports.
The head of the Paraguayan FA is named Robert Harrison?
This seems to be building in the usual telenovela fashion. We need a beautiful girl who is either blind or suffering from a terminal illness and someone on a horse,
Can you remind us where Olimpia fits into Paraguayan society?
Yes, you'll have these Anglo-German-Irish-Swiss names pop out of the blue. Every 3rd person is a Fleitas or Lopez or Aquino, but the English were brought in en masse in the 1850s to build the railroads and industry, and the Mennonites have been here since the 1920s.
Olimpia is basically the Giants/Yankees....Wall Street Executives, University Professors, Dominican/Nuyoricans, and Da Ringz knuckleheads.
Cerro is basically the Jets/Mets....Queens dockworkers, lower middle class of Flushing, ironic hipster new money tech execs.
ABC Color has a video of the evidence presented to FIFA, with seemingly a bottle of "gaseosa" inserted in the hand of Federico Acuna (n with the n-yay I can't post anymore.) This gaseosa bottle was code that the fix was in. ABC Color bravely uses a Zapruder-film finetooth comb to discover that photo on the chat submitted to FIFA was totally doctored, and there was actually sin gaseosa en la mano. https://youtu.be/oNhei2BkF74?t=209
Here we are, end of the abbreviated 11-week season (for a 12 team league) and we will have our first knockout rounds in quite a while.
The surprise leader is Salvador Cabanas's former team, Octubre 12, who finished first with a 2-1 win over Cerro Porteno last night. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1o1nKln6r40
That stadium is quite special to me, as it was the first Copa Libertadores game I ever saw live when I got Dish Network in 2001. With the trees peeking over the walls it may have been in the middle of a rainforest. However, it was just Itagua. And the rise of O12 has been like the Undertaker rising off the mat. Dead last, winless in many of their first games, then almost the entire team getting Covid'd....only to go on a tear during this short season.
Right now....
Thine Quarterfinals.....
1) Octubre 12 vs (8) Guarenia
Both teams were the last two promoted together to the Primera, and Guarenia was the rage during last season. They obviously have flip-flopped in form. But Guarenia is a tough out and can very well pull the upset. I'll still say O12 1-1 (4-2 PK)
2) Nacional v (7) Sol de America
Should be a bit of a good game, as both have nasty offenses with Nildo Viera of Sol and a bunch of people who can score for Nacional. Nacional has the definite edge.
Nacional 3-1
3) Cerro Porteno v (6) Olimpia
ViejOlimpia really sucks, but if they go all out they can definitely beat the Churin-less CCP. I think Roque has one last bit of magic.
O 3:2 CCP
4) Libertad v (5) Guarani
Both out of the Libertadores, the only question is if Guarani finds their form from March. Libertad is quite nasty right now, and I don't think Guarani will find it.
Libertad 2:0 Guarani
Ok, so I went 1 for 4, or more specifically .5 for 4.
How the F did I know the lost-smiled down-on-the-dumps team-of-Eeyores Guarani that existed the past 4 months and the first half against Libertad down 1-0 would suddenly find their smile again along with the pep in the step and a tiger in the tank and just run Libertad out of Luque? (Bobadilla also went WAAAAAAY further downtown from removing the shirt after a goal and may have the record for furthest downtown the shorts went. Straight up porno celebrations the past year.)
How the F did I know Nacional - highest goal differential in the league - would lay such an egg against Sol de America?
Granted, I knew Olimpia wouldn't play any worse, simply because they couldn't play any worse. And Cerro was only champion because Diego Churin went full Paolo Rossi for 11 games instead of 3 before they shipped him to Gremio.
I did know Guarenia could beat The 12, but not going up 2-0 in the first half like they did. They held on for a 2-1 win after O 12 got a rojo for some horseshit multiple yellow calls.
All 4 top seeds lost.
So the semis....
(7) Sol de America v (6) Olimpia
Olimpia 4-1. They don't play around with Sol.
(5)Guarani v (8) Guarenia
This Guarani would have done undefeated in the group stage in the Libertadoes...but they've always had problems with Guarenia.
I'll say Guarani in penalties 2-2 (5-4)
Can't find any highlights from Guarenia-O12. But in case you wanted to hear the radio when O12 scored and beat sad-sack version Guarani a few weeks ago...
https://youtu.be/l7nYnGwtvw8?t=3632 (About 1 hour 1 minute in if that doesn't work.)
I for one think Guarenia's story is amazing. They were formed in 2018. Made every promotion, and here they were in the semi-finals of the top league. As you see in that vid, they give everyone problems.
Tough one to pick. I'll figure it out by tomorrow.
