    AFCON - an idiot speaks

Thick twat from club football thinks he should have priority over internationals.

To think, I used to like him

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/amp/football/51152641

    It's COUNTRY > (County) >> CLUB.

    No ifs.

    No arguments

    No buts.

If you don't want international players to be unavailable.

    Then DON'T FUCKING SIGN THEM

To be fair he's probably been caught out with the tournament being switched back to January. Keeping it then 'could' make African players less marketable.

I'm not sure saying no ifs, buts or arguments is a great tactic on an internet discussion board tbh.

Manager of Liverpool prioritises his team over something else. Angry man on internet gets angry.

There was always a chance of this happening though:

1 - The temperatures in Cameroon in June/July aren't exactly conducive to 90 minutes of rigorous activity.

2 - A summer tournament would have clashed with the new format of the Club World Cup.

3 - The CAF being the CAF.

Why should CAF care about whether their continental competition affects clubs on another continent anyway? And who cares if that knocks a few million quid off the value of a player for one of the richest clubs in the world. CAF are free to make whatever decision they want to make without commentary from white Europeans.

I'm not a professional footballer, but as a fan I can say that I couldn't give a rats arse about international football. The club is all.

Because most of the players in the tournament play in a uefa league. including virtually every player in nearly every team that makes it to the world cup. People seem very quick to ask players to make very hard choices.

Guy's new years resolution of being weirdly, aggressively wrong about things is going well so far, isn't it?

That's a (financial) might is right argument where the interests of those with wealth are prioritised.

There's also the issue of dual national players. There's quite a lot of players playing for african teams, who were born in europe to african migrants. Particularly France. quite a few of them will have switched to playing for the country of their parents after having played for france Under-age. This is a massive kick in the teeth for them. And it's not a might is right argument. That ship has long sailed. It's about not penalizing over half of the players in the tournament. not a single one of them will be happy about this.

There are no good solutions to this. Either you restrict the hosting of the tournament to ones that can get away with a 'summer' tournament, or you have to deal with an awful lot of premature retirements from international football, and throw up a massive roadblock in the path of the development of the best players from africa. Big clubs having a bunch of important first team players who represent African countries is a relatively new thing. If this wasn't supposed to have gone away in 2017, would Liverpool have still signed Mo Salah over Julian Brandt? (Klopp was persuaded by his statisticians) You might be prepared to deal with Mane heading off, as it's only one player, but the prospect of losing two of your front three?

The temperatures in Cameroon are no different in January to those in July. It's in the tropics. Rainfall, granted, would have made staging it fun. I think you've hit the nail more on the head with the potential clash with FIFA's new bauble, ironically one they will be desperate for Liverpool to enter.

So why did Liverpool sign Minamino, in full knowledge that the Asian Cup is run at a similar time of year?

Because they thought that he would be the only player missing? It's not that bad to have one player go away like this. Three at once, and from the same part of the team is a challenge.

Because he tore them a new one in their CL fixtures, and appears to be an ideal Klopp-type player? Whether he's a good signing or not remains to be seen.

I mean, a club manager prioritising club before country is hardly new, despite Guy's outrage.

The 2023 tournament is in China and will be held in the summer.

So why was it mentioned as a factor in moving the tournament? You're right in that it does sound like an excuse for it not to clash with the CWC.

Also in that article, Klopp never says once that he would stop his players going or somesuch. I'm sure he would have used similar phrasing if he'd lost all three to injury or suspension for the same period.

which will mean their player isn't rested after a long season, which will be another issue.club managers just don't like international football
