Is CPL something that's kept entirely separate from MLS in Canada?
Yep. Last year was inaugural season. Seven teams, maybe up to eight this year. Canada briefly had a domestic league from 1987 to 1995 or so (I could be out a year at ether end), but there wasn't the money to keep it going. This time looks much more promising.
The big story right now, which jefe alludes to, is up here is that we've had the our very first CPL-to-MLS transfer, with Joel Waterman moving from Calgary to the impact. With a transfer fee! All very grown up. Also still a non-zero chance Tristan Borges moves up a level as well. All good signs for Canadian soccer.
Chicharito to the Galaxy for a ridiculous amount of money.
LAFC, having imported a keeper from Feyenoord, traded Tyler Miller to the Loons for $350K of allocation money. Orlando opened their training facility, and bought a Peruvian keeper also.

Chicago and Cincinnati both signed new GK's, and Chicago also signed a Slovenian forward as a DP; Philly adds a Slovakian U-21 MF as a DP of their own.
The NISA teams are in the Open Cup this year, coming in in the second round, pairings announced today. The big concern for NM United fans is the extension of safety netting from foul pole to foul pole (due to playing at Isotopes Park) making a pretty crappy viewing experience. The fans want a retractable net.
Toronto's new DP appears to be Pablo Piatti, provided his knees don;t give out during the medical. If true, this would be the first time in fifteen seasons TFC had a winger who could both run and cross (Laurent Robert was only 1 out of 2 on that score).
