    Longest UEFA international tournament "duck"

Assuming Finland manage to draw with Liechtenstein, they will have broken a duck stretching back to 1949, but even they have to cede leadership to Luxembourg, who have been attempting qualification since 1934:

    Luxembourg: 86 years
    Finland: 70 years
    Cyprus: 58 years
    Malta: 56 years
    Faroe Islands: 30 years
    San Marino: 30 years
    Estonia: 28 years
    LIthuania: 28 years
    Armenia: 26 years
    Azerbaijan: 26 years
    Belarus: 26 years
    Georgia: 26 years
    Liechtenstein: 26 years
    Moldova: 26 years
    North Macedonia: 26 years
Kazakhstan: 24 years (6 in Asia)
    Andorra: 22 years
    Montenegro: 12 years
    Gibraltar: 6 years
    Kosovo: 4 years

I'm pretty sure that Luxembourg have the most defeats and have shipped most goals. They lost all their games from their debut in March 1934 to beating Portugal in Oct 1961. Their best ever result might be a win in Holland in 1963 during Euro qualifying.

Luxembourg's 3-2 win at home to NI in 2013 flattered the visitors

Looking more closely their best ever result must be beating the eventual runners-up in Euro 96 qualifying. Maybe the Czechs played like the name of their coach?

The Czechs were 8 points behind Norway after that game but Norway's Euro 96 campaign was almost a forerunner of RoI and NI's this year: very heavily front-loaded:

Luxembourg also reached the last 8 in 1964 as a result of beating Holland. That’s deserving of equivalent recognition as Wales’ run in 1976 for a start.

Only reaching the semis officially counted as qualifying, however.

Well it’s hardly an equivalence, is it, between the modern bollocks of 24 teams in a finals and the old days where only 4 teams made it to “the finals”, and the quarterfinals were played over two legs after the FA Cup Final but were not part of “the finals” which were then played over one weekend in whichever of the finalists said ‘yeah, we’ve got enough sandwiches?’

It's a loss less romantic when you consider that they only had to finish above Greece, Armenia, Bosnia and Liechtenstein.

Turkey went 42 years of non-qualifying between the 1954 EC and Euro 96 but have reached more Euro final tournaments (5) than Poland (4).

With Finland now officially off the list, who's next most likely to fracture Daffy? I'd be surprised if anyone says anybody other than Kosovo.

Georgia are always competitive, they're just a couple of players away from the next level.

It'll be whoever wins the Group D playoffs - Kosovo or otherwise one of Belarus, Georgia or North Macedonia.

It would make a lot more sense for Uefa to set up a "plate" tournament for the remaining countries and give a qualification place to the winner. We wouldn't have to suffer all these tedious non games and quite frankly its the only way any of them are going to qualify.

Yeah, I'd be tempted to put a cheeky outside bet on Macedonia there. They've been punching above their weight in their qualifying group.

It will be interesting to see whether winning the play-offs just two months before the finals gives teams a competitive sharpness that belies their low ranking, but they seem more likely to be whipping boys at this point, which is a problem when a whole group phase is played at the Euros to eliminate only 8 teams out of 24.

Plus it will artificial boost the goal difference of a third-placed team, which then gets compared across groups.

This tournament setup is fucked up.

Or the play-off winners all the park the bus to avoid a pasting.

I wouldn't dismiss Kosovo if they did qualify - they've certainly troubled England and the Czechs during the group. Georgia, however, have been more doggedly dour than impressive.
