I think it's fair to say that WSC's most memorable covers have been the ones that have been "political" in some sense. The post Hillsborough covers, and Pele saying "who is Ron Noades anyway?" . The sort of topical premier league Private-Eye-ish gags don't work half as well

Hope all are well, just dropping by to say I’ve signed up for the patreon and am renewing my lapsed magazine subscription Only saw this afternoon on twitter that WSC is in a bit of trouble, really concerned to read that. In a rational world, WSC magazine and podcast would be the world’s most popular football choice. We don’t live in a sane world, hence we need to band together as best we can. The best of luck to WSC and happy to help out in my small financial way. Cheers.

I can see though that putting Bury or Haringey (as examples of big stories outside of the Prem, with wider implications for the game) on the cover would be seen as commercially problematic, but not sure sticking a weak gag about Arsenal on the front is reflecting what's in the mag, nor what the readership are interested in. Don't know the answer really - and I'm sure it's all a drop in the ocean compared to the wider decline of print media - just putting it out there.
A problem WSC addressed brilliantly with the cover "Ryan Giggs - is he being used to sell magazines?" while there was not one single mention of him anywhere else in the issue.

It's a real shame about Kickaround - I had subscribed to this for my 7-year old son, and recently received an email explaining it shutting down and asking how I wanted my £12 overpayment refunding. I haven't responded, as I don't need/want it back. I really hope WSC itself doesn't go the same way.

These were the very ones I had in mind as I typed that.

Bury, of course, were on the front cover of the October issue.

                    Haha!

As UA says there were a lot more than that and they were invariably interesting, well-argued and articulate contributions.

Quite frankly he stood out like a sore thumb!

The Graham Kelly blueprint for football where he's holding the Beano. That still makes me laugh.

I seem to paying a higher subscription rate than most of youse, so I feel I'm doing my bit. I almost cancelled it last year - had even told Mrs Thistle I was going to - and then they made the decision to bin off betting adverts and so I decided to continue with my sub.

Yes, ditto. We loved Kickaround and similarly I'm not going to be asking for a refund.

Now, how many of my relatives want a Christmas present from the WSC shop?

Just added something via Patreon. Currently 169 have contributed. Doesn't seem that many to me. Not sure how many subscribers WSC print edition has but I'd like to think they could all maybe put a bit in - although of course personal circumstances may not allow.

I'd miss WSC if the worst happened.

I've still got about 9 more yrs of digital "back issues" to get through - want to take my time getting through them all.

While I've nothing against giving a similar amount to WSC as I do to Nishlord's Chart Music podcast, I'm wondering what happened to the donations for this very messageboard. Am I right I thinking the facility to give up cold hard cash disappeared a few years back? I'd happily give a wee bit of cash each month to OTF as well as the parent WSC site.

Nice to hear from you Geoffrey - I've not been paying much attention to the Juniors scene, but hope the Bankies are doing well.

Living in Australia, I switched to the digital subscription over a year ago as it was just getting too expensive and was arriving in my letterbox just as everyone in the UK was getting the following month's through theirs. I ordered a subscription to Kickaround for my nephews in Scotland back in June, and it was sad to see they only got to receive one or two issues before it got cancelled.

I'll be right upset if WSC goes the same way as Kickabout so I'll be signing up. Having a Tier 4 subscription on top of the digital subscription will be similar in cost to when I used to subscribe to the print version, but I won't be going any higher as the Aussie dollar is pretty weak at the moment.

I had also got a Kickaround subscription, this one was for my old primary school in Hayes - I remember thinking at the time that it seemed like a brave move to bring out a new print magazine, it's a huge shame that it didn't prove viable. But, based on the content of the editorial and from seeing how things have developed in print media over the last decade and more, it's probably no surprise that it happened. Definitely don't want to see WSC go the same way, so just signed up on Patreon as well (the numbers are creeping up to over 200 now) and will be passing on the link to see if I can tempt anyone else to chip in.

I'm not so sure, UA - if they all nailed it like this I think six posts would have been enough to make Geoffrey seriously missed.

Reading previous pages of the thread, apologies if it sounds like we're saying you must help WSC. I've gone a bit on-line chugger here - not good - but GdeSC's post perfectly communicates why WSC is so valuable.

Was reading Stewart Lee's column today (I know - get me, eh), having what's becoming an increasingly familiar feeling - the relief of knowing someone is out there calling all the bullshit, in a true, entertaining fashion, quickly followed by the terrifying realisation that doing so is such a niche sector of the media.

BBC News has a Reality Check feature ffs. A feature. In politics, the BBC now sees facts as anecdotal.

WSC is happy to reduce the Premier League and World Cups to an anecdote - perhaps via a cheeky, flippant front cover - because those enterprises have more than enough media looking after them, and usually in the same manipulative, hysterical fashion which has bled into mainstream politics.

MSM is now about maintaining binary opposition rather than any sense of pulling together for the greater good. What WSC does re football coverage - calming shit down and calling shit out - is good for wider society, and the soul.

All I'll say is when the US Bush II regime arrested a few execs as they got off the plane, it went from being FTSE listed to being Head Officed in Costa Rica, with funding from purely non goombah Legitimate Businessmen.

And the whole time I worked there we processed deposits and withdrawals for hopelessly pathetically addicted yanks via fake Western Union offices supposedly in Nicaragua. Some regular marks deposited 10 grand a night. Withdrawals of any decent amount were much less common.

And part of my job was giving a fake name pretending to be working for a Credit Card Processing company when a certain number appeared onscreen, as irate wives tried to find out where their husband was spending all their cash. The cries of "Is it porn? Is it Whores?" haunt my dreams still.
