Most people in favour of No Deal - The FA Cup 2019-20 thread

Couldn't find an existing FA Cup thread, so kicking it off with yesterday's Extra-Preliminary round tie...

    Sutton Athletic 3-2 Deal Town

This was Southern Counties East Division One side Sutton Athletic's first ever FA Cup tie, as they hosted Deal Town from the division above. London Hire Stadium is a grandiose name for a pitch in a fenced off pitch in a field with two very rickety home-made stands, but the football more than made up for it. In a high wind, both sides tried to play football on the deck, with Athletic excelling at it; they looked a young side and really moved the ball about well. They were unlucky not to be ahead at the break, going in level at 1-1, when Deal grabbed an equaliser thanks to a brilliantly played advantage from an excellent referee.

Sutton got a deserved second after the break, and were only denied a third by three excellent saves from the Deal keeper, before the visitors bundled in an equaliser in the final minute. It seemed harsh on the hosts, so was good to see their endeavours rewarded in injury time when a whipped in corner was headed into his own net by the Deal captain to provide a debut 'Cupset'. They host Ashford Town - the Middlesex one - in the next round and will certainly give them a game.

Does the other Ashford Town still exist? I thought they'd folded.

Are Sutton Athletic a Sutton United legacy team?

They folded in 2010, reforming as Ashford United

Not to rub salt into Giggler's wounds, but what happens in the Cup if Bury fold? Do they get drawn in the first round proper and their opponent gets a bye, or does something similar happen in earlier qualifying rounds so 21, not 20, non-league teams enter at that stage?

Man utd in 2000 precedent? Reprieve a losing team from the 4th qualifying round. If memory serves it was darlington in 2000

Winslow United 2-3 Roman Glass St George (Step 6 v Step 5)
A very entertaining if not a little bad tempered match went the way of the visitors in autumnal conditions. Winslow's keeper was battered after 5 minutes and took about another 10 to recover. He then dropped to the floor after another 10 minutes with no one around him. Earwigging at half time suggested he was unconscious for a while so why the hell he continued is anyone's guess. Winslow took the lead with a penalty and the visitors equalised just before half-time but not before they were thwarted by two excellent saves . Roman Glass were a gobby bunch, niggly and took the lead after a 'soft' penalty decision. Winslow's keeper then took one more challenge before the manager took him off to be replaced by an outfielder who made a point blank save just before the equaliser from a corner. The winner was a fantastic shot from 25 yards which into the net above the stretch of the stand-in...who possibly tellingly, was a good 6 inches shorter than his colleague. All in all, an excellent game, a draw being the fairer result and not many spectators moaned at the extra quid on top of the usual fee.

Happened to Salisbury City a few years ago - they went bust after the entries had been accepted and early rounds drawn but before they were due to enter the competition, so they were included in the draw anyway and their opponents were automatically given a bye.

I had my 50th at their clubhouse. Some of us really know how to live.

Good to see Balham going through on Friday night, as well.

Am I the only person to have noticed that of Keynsham Town's last eight FA cup games, all but one has been against a team beginning with the letter B?

Kendal Town 0 Hemsworth MW 4

Kendal only escaped relegation from the Northern Premier League Division One last season due to the fact that Colwyn Bay decamped, somewhat controversially, to Welsh League football and second - bottom Kendal avoided the drop.

Unfortunately this performance. - against a team from a level below them in the pyramid - suggests that this season they may not avoid the cull.

From the beginning Hemsworth showed themselves to be vastly superior in all departments: more organised, physically strong on resolute at the back, quicker, more technically proficent and less inclined to give up possession easily in midfield and slicker and more direct up front. The four goals - two in each half - barely did justice to the huge gulf in class. Only the fact that Hemsworth realised quite early on they could cruise unbothered in second gear avoided the real hiding which Kendal's abject performance deserved.

Losing team in the 2nd round, wasn't it? Darlo were still a league team then.

                                Hoddesdon Town 2-0 Brantham Athletic

The game was played at Ware's ground on a 3G pitch. as Hoddesdon share with the local cricket club who are still using the pitch. The game was quite forgettable but it was played in some lovely sunshine with a fair number of ground hoppers making up the crowd.

Northampton ON Chenecks 2-3 Godmanchester Rovers,

Second game/ground I've been to this weekend that had been moved due to Cricket matches. The other being at Sholing which kicked off at 8pm yesterday, their ground is enclosed though, but there were worries about stray cricket balls clearing the fence apparently. Not the case at Old Northamptonians where the square is right next to the football pitch and the floodlights had still to be re-erected on that side of the pitch. It absolutely slaughtered it down in an entertaining first half, the second half while a lot dryer was a bit rubbish until near the end. Had the odd site of an air ambulance landing behind the goal with 5 minutes to go, I soon found out why when trying to leave the ground as their were several police cars and a worryingly mangled car blocking the end of the road.

On the narrow screen of my phone, the BBC scores on Saturday had “Sunderland... 0-0 Sunderland...” (can’t even beat themselves etc)
I believe it was RCA v Ryhope

Some absolutely wonderful goalkeeping in the Tuffley v North Greenford United game last night:

Fortunately, NGU went onto win 2-1 and spare the keeper's blushes.

The really freaky thing about that 3rd round draw in 2000 was that Man United and Aston Villa were then drawn together a further four times in the third round in the next 8 years. It was almost like the FA Cup was a version of 'Final Destination'.
