I'm talking about the crushing effects of inequality, which comes at the expense of everyone else. I'm sure it seems a bit different to people who live in the cities and towns that have la liga clubs. But when you're trying to sell foreign TV rights to people in other countries, its important not to turn most of your league into the guy in the red shirt who beams down with captain kirk.

Hazard has a muscle injury and will miss Madrid's opener

It seems like all of their efforts to cure themselves of their Baledepencia are doomed to fail.

        Currently on ITV4.

Athletic score a wonderful goal to lead 1-0 just before FT about five seconds after I turn the TV on.

That perhaps the most regionally diverse country in europe, essentially has only three meaningful football clubs, rammed into the two biggest cities, tells you a lot about Spanish society doesn't it? If there was a country in Europe that could plausibly support a GAA style localism based football culture you'd think it would be spain. the 40,000 qualified coaches is the hard part of this.
Surely the Basque Country is the prime example of a GAA-style football culture - firstly, Athletic managing to remain competitive in the race for European places despite limiting themselves to Basque players, and selling most of their best prospects on an annual basis, then Real Sociedad and Osasuna being Primera Liga regulars, and finally both Alaves and Eibar defying the odds of both population and finances to upset the major teams continually?

Aduriz becomes the first Spanish player to score in fifteen consecutive seasons in La Liga.

Messi has done it too, of course.

is this freckly bastard seriously trying to pass himself off as coming from the iberian peninsula?

Also I find it extremely hard to believe that he is 38. Is this one of those "Duffman can never die, only the actors who play him" scenarios, where the character of Aduriz is currently being played by a 25 year old from the irish midlands?

In which case he's still being played by a 25 year old from the midlands.

this is what he looked like before he grew his stubble

                      He's basically the basque zanetti.

Thanks, Diable Rouge. I might just check this out, if there is an app I can get for my TV. It looks like it might be shaping up to be a really interesting season. (Or, to put it another way, it looks likely to be less of a two horse race this year).

Wouldn't be like Valencia CF to have a modicum of stability

A note from Segunda Division where Rayo's Martin Pascual made his second start, and received his second expulsion, in his team's win over Racing. Probably more noteworthy to mention the times when Rayo don't have a player sent off in a league game.

Camp Nou evidently as gentrified as Old Trafford or the Parc des Princes now - playing semi-local rivals and it's like a library.

The Camp Nou has never been loud. It isn't at all new, though it arguably has become more apparent as tourists make up a larger portion of the crowd.

I think you might be confusing barcelona with bilbao. the Nou Camp hasn't had a reputation for being a continuous cauldron of noise for a long time.

                                              oops. beaten to it.

What is the age profile like at the typical barca Game ursus, compared to an english club. Do they have the same aging crowd problem, or does the member thing help?

What really "helps" are the tourists, who tend to be in their 20s and 30s (if not younger) and can make up as much as half the crowd at an "unattractive" fixture. The member thing also helps (given that many soci families register their children at birth), but that isn't reflected one-for-one in attendance. And although I haven't seen numbers recently, there was a trend for the average age of socis to be rising, which was exacerbated by the decision to no longer offer new memberships to people without a Spanish address (as the foreigners tended to be younger on average).

Improving the atmosphere is one of the goals of the plans to redevelop the ground (though not its primary goal, which is to increase revenue from hospitality, sponsorship, etc.).
