    Existential Photos of What Goalkeeping Feels Like

    Tonight's Catholic School final had this great pic of one of 5 goals going in...

    here

    ..which reminded me of the ultimate photo of what it feels like to be a goalkeeper, courtesy of Dida realizing the harmless cross to the far post was in fact unmarked-

      For the sheer “awe, geeze a fuqin break, man” resignation, it has to be Alan Rough at the ’82 World Cup as he watches Brazil’s fourth sail on by on its way to the top corner.

            If I may indulge myself, this is one I took of Kasper Schmeichel when he was on loan with us (Darlo) `back in Feb 2006:

            I seem to remember the shot was a few inches wide of the post.

            And here is a link to my Homes of Football homage - keeper Sam Russell retrieving the ball from the building site behind one goal (now the Terry Parris stand, Lewes) as two kids look on.

            Wot - no ballboys?

              There's also a nice one of Oliver Baumann in the middle of a 7-0 loss to Bayern here, although I can't link to it as an image, as it's part of one of those photostreams and the exact file location/name is hidden somehow.

                        They look like the markings on the end zone of a Gridiron pitch.

                                        I bet none of these goalies in these photos were feeling the same level of anguish as Nery Pumpido.

                                          He is surely the most cursed goalkeeper ever.

                                              And this week's No.1 is...

                                              (I love No.9 there. The ground covered by that cheeky, hirsute right-back in order to make the tackle is quite something!)

                                              (edit: Blimey! I didn't realise that dog's tackle ended the keeper's career! That's terrible!)

                                                It is a great thread but let's cover photos of what the positive side of keeping feels like;

                                                The fact that penalty-taker Waghorn is still in the second pic but prostrate gives it a contrast that makes the picture even more vivid.
