Klinsmann really left behind a wreck. Hertha might still fund themselves ragged down into a real relegation dogfight, especially if they lose at Düsseldorf on Friday. Fortuna and Mainz are capable of collecting points here and there, Werder are a much better side than their position suggests (they apparently gave BVB a pretty tough run), and even Paderborn gave Bayern problems on Friday.
Köln, who are level on points with Hertha, could also be dragged back down. A nine points advantage can melt away in a month. But Gisdol and manager Horst Held have transformed Köln into a decent team. The loan of Mark Uth was a masterstroke, and Gisdol integrated very talented youngsters into the side.

The fun at Hertha has no end. Now Klinsmann has leaked a document (obviously to his own great surprise) that trashtalks everybody at Hertha as incompetent or evil or both. That includes the social media department. Everybody but the tea lady gets it, especially, of course, Michael Preetz.
Klinsmann is burning bridges like a retreating Wehrmacht general. It's fair to say that the public reaction to his shit-stirring indicates a PR disaster for Klinsi. A true winter horror story.
Seeing as Klinsmann was heaved into position by Windhorst, one wonders how this will impact on the club's relationship with their investor.
All this comes as Hertha is preparing for a run of fixtures against other relegation strugglers. Klinsmann's antics can hardly help...

Fortuna Düsseldorf have their own "This Is Anfield" kind of sign at their Merkur Spielplatz. It says, in English: "Defend Our House". But it seems that this inspirational instruction no longer applies in the rare event of Düsseldorf leading 3-0. Last night they contrived to throw away a 3-0 lead against crisis club Hertha.

Dortmund control the match for 85 minutes and then Freiburg shows up for the last 5 (including injury time) but luckily Dortmund held onto the 1-0 lead for the win. Freiburg's keeper made a really nice save late in the game to keep the team in the mix. In past games Dortmund have tried too get to cute in the final third and gave away scoring chances. That wasn't case today; rather, Freiburg's team defense was really good. They just had nothing going forward and Dortmund had a second game in a row where their own team defense was excellent.Last edited by danielmak; 01-03-2020, 07:02.

The establishment is now drawing wagons Hopp, with a large number of fans joining in. At Köln, the referee refused to let the second half kick off unless fans removed an anti-Hopp banner. And Bayern's absurd recreation of West Germany vs Austria 1982 (at which Rummenigge was the captain, of course) has been celebrated as the great defence of standard in football. Kicker has gone full-on pro-Hopp and anti-ultras.
Now, I don't think the form of protests are justifiable. Calling a man a son of a whore, or depicting him in crosshairs is not a commendable way of registering protest, even if Hopp is a bit of a dickhead. But the reasons for the anti-Hopp sentiments are legit -- the corruption of 50+1. The collective punishment decreed against all fans is another reason for the protests, though the target then should be the functionaries.
It's no coincidence that Bayern, who oppose 50+1, should come to the defence of Hopp. Split the fans from the ultras and for Hopp, and you get them to accept that 50+1 is no longer appropriate in modern football.

Excellent work by G to remind everyone that Bayern have been anti 50+1 for some time (and have been nibbling at its edges with their sponsorship equity deals). It is an important piece of context that I have yet to see in Anglo reaction to the incidents.
I do wonder to what degree players have bought the propaganda that 50+1 depresses their salaries and ability to win European trophies.
