    How the draw works

Holders Lyon, the top two clubs from the ten highest-ranked countries (a list which also includes Lyon) and the champions of the 11th and 12th-ranked nations (Scotland and Austria) in accordance with the association coefficient rankings receive 22 byes to the round of 32, as per the access list.

The other 40 entrants (the Scottish and Austrian runners-up, and the champions of the remaining 38 associations) must compete in the qualifying round from 7 to 13 August for 10 spots alongside those 22 sides already in the knockout phase.

For the qualifying round draw the hopefuls are ranked according to their coefficient, and in the draw one team from each of the four established seeding positions will be allocated to one of the ten groups.

Ten clubs have also been designated as hosts: Gintra Universitetas, FC Twente, SFK 2000 Sarajevo, Kharkiv, Pomurje Beltinci, Anderlecht, Slovan Bratislava, Breznica Pljevlja, Flora Tallinn and Rīgas Futbola skola. They will be drawn first from a separate pot and placed in their group according to their seeding position.

Last season's quarter-finalists LSK Kvinner plus tournament regulars BIIK-Kazygurt and Gintra Universitetas will be seeded in the round of 32 if they get through, as potentially would be Twente, Apollon LFC and ŽFK Spartak.

Braga, ŽNK Split, Beşiktaş, Flora Tallinn, FC Nike and Alashkert (the first Armenian entrants since College Yerevan in the inaugural 2001/02 edition) are all making their debuts in the qualifying round.

The ten qualifying group winners proceed to the 16 August draw for the round of 32, with the two-legged knockout phase commencing in September.

Given that Arsenal are currently 16th in the list, they must have a very high chance of not being seeded, then. They and Juventus will be the sides the seeds are desperate to avoid.

Yes, looks that way. Kvinner have got to get past Anderlecht and a couple of others in their group. Anderlecht didn't make it out of their group last time but were in one that finished with a team on zero and three teams (including them) on 6. They missed out to Glasgow City after they aggregated the three head-to-head matches. But then Glasgow were knocked out in the first round by .... Kvinner. So Kvinner v Anderlecht should be an interesting match and group but you'd probably favour the Norwegians.

BIIK-Kazygurt should win their group. They are old hands at this, while Vantaa have never proven particularly tough opposition at this stage (previously drawing with Shelbourne and losing to Linfield for example) and that alone would be enough to push Arsenal into the unseeded side.

Gintra similarly usually get through this stage, winning their qualifying group for the past two seasons. Three seasons ago they did fail to win their group, finishing second to... BIIK-Kazygurt.

So yeah, I think Arsenal are going to be 18th or maybe even 19th once we have all 32 teams set to go.

Now - that old favourite game. The OP mentions that there are teams with byes from 12 associations, and then talks about the champions of the remaining 38 associations. I make that 50 in total. But UEFA has 55 associations in its membership, so who are the missing ones?

I'll start with the easy one - Liechtenstein.

According to Wiki, "There were 283 registered female players in 2016, with a decline in 2017 to 259 registered players. 61 of these players in 2017 were 18+, while 198 were youth players. Four women coaches were UEFA B licence holders while another four were National C licence holders. There was one qualified female referee in the country in 2017, and she only worked women's games. Girls played football in mixed groups as part of their organized school curriculum.

Playing in Switzerland is the norm for most women's clubs in the country as a result of the size of their population and its location. Liechtenstein women's clubs that have played in Switzerland based leagues include FC Ruggel and Triesen/Balzers. Women from Liechtenstein have also played for clubs in Switzerland. In 2017, three women from the country played for FC St. Gallen / Staad including Katja Beck, Sophia Hürlimann and Lena Göppel.

Liechtenstein women also play in a domestic league. The league is supported by the Liechtenstein Football Association. It had four teams in 2017. The league was not professional, with all the players being domestic ones. Average attendance at league matches was 30 people in 2017."

The Bulgarian champions NSA Sofia are entering, so that's not one of the answers even though their WNT did not take part in World Cup qualification last year iirc.

The five non-entrants are Andorra, Azerbaijan, Gibraltar, Liechtenstein and San Marino.

Gibraltar does have a women's league, although it only has three teams. Until four or five years ago it was a 9-a-side competition.

Azerbaijan seems the odd one out in the list.

Gibraltar has no entrant. Until last year's edition they were not eligible since the league was 9-a-side. It consisted of four teams until then but that season Manchester 62 pulled out, so there are just three teams left now: Lincoln Red Imps, Lions Gibraltar and Europa. Red Imps won the league in both eligible seasons. In 2017-18 though they only played four league games. Last season it looks like they did home and away five times to make a longer season of it.

                      Gibraltar Womens Football League 2018/19
                      Lincoln Red Imps FC Women 10 6 3 1 8 21
                      Lions Gibraltar FC women 10 4 5 1 9 17
                      Europa FC Women 10 0 2 8 -17 2
However the Red Imps have not yet entered the UWCL.

Cheers SZ! I wonder if distance is a problem for the Azeris? Then again, Georgia and Armenia seem happy to take part.

Last year there were six non-entrants - the same five plus Armenia. I wonder how Alashkert will get on? The Armenia WNT hasn't played a competitive game since 2012.
