    Europa League early bits 2019-20

Only half a week until the Preliminary Round draw (Tuesday 12pm).

There are 14 teams taking part in this season's UEFA Europa League preliminary round draw.

Seeded: La Fiorita (SMR), Progrčs (LUX), Cliftonville (NIR), Europa (GIB), NSÍ (FRO), KÍ Klaksvík (FRO), Prishtina (KOS)

Unseeded: Sant Juliŕ (AND), Engordany (AND), Tre Fiori (SMR), Barry Town (WAL), Cardiff MU (WAL), St Joseph's (GIB), Ballymena (NIR)
So Barry won't be going to Andorra and have a 2/7 chance of a draw against a Faroese club.

According to Twitter the ball rolls too fast on the Jenner Park 3G pitch which is why they have to play their home game at Leckwith Stadium. Despite the relocation I'm still feeling excited!

Prishtina might be the toughest draw.

I'm not sure how this works but there are two pots and whoever gets drawn first plays at home first. They don't say whether the seeded pot gets drawn from first or not. I would imagine so which means Barry are most likely away for the first leg.

I’m surprised Progress Niederkorn are in the very bottom pot. They’re the ones who knocked Rangers out two years ago. You’d have thought that win alone would have bumped them up the coefficient table.

Depends on the country as well, though, doesn't it?

In Luxembourg's case, Dudelange making the group stage the season just gone would have given that side of the calculation a boost as well.

From 2021 these teams or their equivalents will be in EL2 first qualifying round. No preliminary round.

Every association from 16-51 will have 3 entrants in the round.

              https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Europa_League_2

The new format also helps CL teams who finish 3rd in their groups because they cannot face an EL group winner until the last 16, only the runners up. Bigger incentive to win your group because you get a bye into the last 16.

But there are fewer groups so it should be tougher.

The entry list, which determines how many entrants a country has and in which rounds they enter, is based upon the ranking at the end of the season before last (i.e. For 2019-20 it is based on the ranking at the end of 2017-18). This is so the number of qualifiers a country will have is known before the start of the domestic season (aside from any country's playing a summer season, although with Russia's switch to a winter season its unlikely that any such nation would be affected by any results after the start of their league season).

Luxembourg was 48th in the ranking at the end of 2017-18 but is now up to 43rd. Almost half of Luxembourg's coefficient comes from 2018-19 (2.625 of 5.500).

It's a season behind because leagues have to know at the start of the season how many places they have up for grabs

Our formerly resident Reids fan Calvert says hello. He expects a hard fought win and that the Gav and Stacey remake will be rubbish

Yeah, no offence, not quite the adventure I hoped for. But affordable and probably a simple overnighter.

Am waiting to see what the official travel package is like otherwise it's Easyjet from Bristol and hoping an acquaintance in Northern Ireland had a spare room.

Presumably the Kosovan clubs will graduate to the draw for the first round proper next season if they progress from their ties as expected?

Kosovo has risen from 55th (i.e. Last) to 53rd in the ranking list. This means that the champions will still have to enter the preliminary round of the 2020-21 Champions League, but they will get a second spot in the Europa League (both starting in the preliminary round).

                                2020-21 Preliminary Round entrants:
CL - Northern Ireland, Kosovo, Andorra, San Marino
EL - Wales (playoff winner), Montenegro (2nd, 3rd), Faroe Islands (Cup winner, 2nd, 3rd), Gibraltar (Cup winner, 2nd, 3rd), Northern Ireland (Cup winner, 2nd), Kosovo (Cup winner, 2nd), Andorra (Cup winner, 2nd), San Marino (Cup winner)

I'm guessing the original Universitatea Craiova count here.

                                      University College Dublin.

The Irish League having to pre-qualify to play teams from Gibraltar and Faroes is embarrassing. But if sun-loving supremo Baxter Basics keeps going to Florida rather than peparing for the ganes, what do we expect?

There will be quite a few from Romania, as well as Craiova. U Cluj, Poli Timisoara, Poli Iasi, Sportul Studentesc have all spent significant time in the top flight and I presume most if not all will have qualified for the UEFA Cup at least once

Fox are being absurdly optimistic about Cardiff MU's chances, for cynical clickbait reasons:

Just a point on Cardiff MU, they aren't a 'university side' in the sense of picking people from the student body to play for them. They have quite a sophisticated recruitment policy and while it's true that many of the players are enrolled on various courses as well, they are semi-professional footballers with virtually a full time coaching team.

There isn't a 'University Football Team' stand in the Fresher's Fair.

They're not stupid, one of the best ideas the FAI have had is linking top underage clubs with League of Ireland sides, it gives young players a route to the first team and helps everybody.
