    Player of the Year Awards

PFA Player of the Year shortlist:

    Sergio Aguero
    Virgil Van Dijk
    Eden Hazard
    Sadio Mané
    Bernardo Silva
    Raheem Sterling

Young Player of the Year shortlist:

    Trent Alexander-Arnold
    David Brooks
    Marcus Rashford
    Declan Rice
    Bernardo Silva
    Raheem Sterling

Surprised there is no place for Son Heung-min the list. He isn't as good a player as Hazard but he gives everything he's got in every game he plays rather than just turn it on when he can be arsed.
Sterling for the main prize for me, and Alexander-Arnold for the young player.

Sterling definitely, as it would also be a fuck you to the tabloids.

What is the cut off for young player?
Silva (born August 1994) and Sterling (December 1994) are both 24, turning 25 this year, which doesn't seem that young.

23 or under at the beginning of the season in question.

Silva just made the cut off.

It does seem strange seeing Sterling in the young player shortlist. He's got seven full seasons under his belt and 226 league appearances. Maybe a maximum number of first team appearances should also apply.

That is the fundamental basis for all of the North American "Rookie of the Year" awards and it works well, though tweaks are now in place for players who arrive from elsewhere in mid- or late-career.

I also think that it is silly that one can win it twice.

James Milner made his senior debut in November 2002 and was voted young player of the year in 2010, by which time he was onto his third top flight club.

I'm sure young player of the year used to be an under 21 thing. Didn't Andy Gray win both in the same year at Villa in about 1977, and then do pretty much fuck all for the next eight years until his swansong at Everton?
