    Bye 'Eck

    Alex McLeish steps down.

Weird timing. If they were determined to get shot of him off the back of the Kazakhstan result then immediately after would have been the time for it.

Or failing that, wait until they had a replacement lined up rather than push him out the door and then have to scramble to get a new coach for the next round of qualifiers.

Unless they have someone in mind already,I wonder if Big Sam can pull off a Scottish accent.

Stuart McCall was sacked by Scunthorpe a little while after the Kazakhstan game. Wonder if they've been talking to him?

You can usually count on the SFA to do the most regressive thing possible... it's gonna be Moyes next, innit?

There have been recent rumors of serious ill health around McLeish

            Large Samuel's grandparents were Scots

Mikey O'Neill lives in Embra. Has a current driving ban but there are no players to watch in England, he can get taxis to Kilmarnock and Perth

Scotland's most successful days came when the team was selected by a committee. Bringing this back will be the first step to restoring Scotland to its rightful place at the top of world football.

The second step will be persuading the likes of Germany, Brazil, Italy, Spain, Argentina, Kazakhstan.... that they have no interest in football.

Thank god he's gone, been hoping to see his name crop up every time the sacked manager thread refreshed. Strachan had his flaws but at least he tried to get the team to play football, Eck had nothing. As 3CR says though, the main downside here is the fear of the SFA somehow managing to appoint someone worse. If anyone can...

The first part is not true. Scotland finished last in their group in 1958 with the team selected by committee. 1974 could arguably be classed as the most successful when, although they were unbeaten, they were eliminated on goal difference. They drew 0-0 with Brazil and should have beaten them (I can’t believe I just typed that)

In 1958, Scotland had no permanent manager and Matt Busby was supposed to be manager for the World Cup. However the Munich air disaster put paid to that hence the committee, who were a bunch of blazers and had no idea what they were doing (according to memoirs in Gary Imlach’s book about his dad Stuart who played in 1958) with players playing in the wrong position, players being forced to play despite being injured etc.

You would need a very, very , very long list of countries for the second step to happen.

I feel a bit sorry for him.

He was never the guy that the SFA wanted for the job. They pursued Michael O'Neil aggressively but couldn't convince him to sign. Nobody else really wanted the job and Eck was available. He almost got the job by default when O'Neil said no. I don't think that the SFA ever got behind the appointment and the fans certainly didnt. Thats never the best of environments for a manager to succeed in.

Add in the state of the Scotland squad. Goalkeepers? Fine, if a little old. When McGregor goes it'll be left to the likes of Bain who is only not getting regular games for Celtic. The defence is poor. Souttar may well prove to be a good centre half, and McKenna has potential, but neither of them are the finished article and neither are currently strong international players. Liam Cooper would be an option. Beyond that there's really nobody of any quality at the heart of the defence. The best 2 defenders are both leftbacks. The right side is a problem, particularly with Paterson not really developing into a quality right back and being used all over the place at club level.

Midfield? The likes of Armstrong and McGregor are good players and you can add in a few youngsters. There isnt really a midfield organiser right now though. We don't have somebody who'll do the dirty stuff if needed and who can dictate to those around him in the middle of the park. Theres potential out wide but that highlights another problem - who do they create for? We don't exactly have great options up front right now.

And from that limited pool of talent, McLeish hasn't exactly been able to select a full strength squad, never mind a first choice first 11.

I don't disagree with him going. The lack of conviction over his appointment, the lack of options in the squad and some uninspiring performances left him in a very vulnerable position. It's just difficult to see where Scotland go next?

Iceland have mostly shite but still qualified for stuff. Proper organization from a non Stone Age coach might go a long way.

Apparently there are decent youth prospects. Though mostly those will be false dawns. I remember when Chris Burke was talked of in awed tones.

Either for 54 Switzerland or 58 Sweden, the blazers decided to send the team out in heavy wool kit, cos of course it would be freezing. In summer. As if every cunt had a Scottish July.

That was 54 iirc, and the players had to wear their club tracksuits because the SFA wouldn't pay for them, of course you also have the hubris of 1950 when they said they'd only go if they won the home internationals, when England beat them they refused the invitation.

Isn't (English born) Scott McTominay the future for Scotland's midfield?

Hmmm. A few years back Oliver Burke was gonna rejuvenate the wings like an ungainly Gemmil/John Robertson with less booze and chips.

He will be, but he's still a few years away from what Scotland desperately need.
