Do you feel the power of the Gladiators? - weekend matchgoing

I'm visiting my mum in Matlock this weekend, so the two of us will most likely make the short walk down the hill to watch Matlock Town play Witton Albion in the Northern Premier League Premier Division. 12th vs 9th; a win for The Gladiators would probably end Witton's relatively faint play-off hopes.

My mum had a half-season ticket for Matlock last season, but has rarely been down this season as she thinks "they just hoof it" too much. She's clearly been spoiled by the free-flowing stuff Doncaster Rovers have played this season. Not often I can say that.

    Bristol Rovers v Bradford City.

A friend set himself the task of completing the 92 by the end of the season, though Tottenham have scuppered that for him, and he's offered me a lift as I also need the Memorial Ground in my 50-years-and-counting quest. This is why I also ended up at Shrewsbury late in 2018. First car journey of the year.

Colchester at home. Rumours the players are on strike after not being paid, internal turmoil after yesterday's WUP in the High Court (deferred until May 15) and the local paper say we're playing Cambridge. Fairly bog-average week at Gigg.

Promotion party at Sincil Bank against Cheltenham. No doubt we'll make a meal of it and lose our first game since Boxing Day. Ideally we'll do the job, as i'm missing on the Good Friday match at Carlisle.

We're playing some bloody good stuff at the moment, but I expect us to roll over and have our tummies tickled on Saturday. Fortunately, I'm moving house so the chances of listening to Cheltenham getting a battering are minimal.

In the north-east for a couple of days, so off to Whitley Bay v Shildon in Northern League Division One. Annoyingly the big game of the day in the league is at Hebburn Town, where I've been before.

Zilina vs Slovan in the Slovak League on Sunday. Slovan have a 100% away record this season and will seal the title if they win. This must not be allowed to happen.

I'm tempted to see if I can get to some Shropshire football this weekend. Salop are away but Wem and Market Drayton are at home. I'll see how I go though as I may need to be around family.

Carlisle away at Stevenage, new ground tick, in amongst a weekend of London based frivolity.

Southport v Hereford - going on the train for a change so I can visit a few of the nicer pubs around the town centre.

                        Workington v Gainsborough Trinity.

Doing a bit of travelling this week as Workington only have one more home game after this.

I should see my first Speedway of the season tomorrow night, Eastbourne Eagles v Somerset Rebels in the second tier SGB Championship. The two have never met before apparently with former top flight stalwarts Eastbourne having just stepped up from a spell languishing in the semi-pro National League and the visitors returning to the middle tier after their two season experiment in the Premiership.

It should be two of my favourite riders facing off, Eddie Kennett and Chris "Bomber" Harris, both of whom featured for my erstwhile club Rye House Rockets over the last two seasons so it will be a bit bittersweet with the club out of action, possibly permanently. Very much looking forward to being back at the track though.

Planning a a south coast game prior, probably Hastings United v Hythe Town as both look well placed in the Isthmian South East. Pilot Field looks like a potentially great ground too.

Friday Night. Aberystwyth Town 0-0 Cefn Druids. When the satnav says it's going to take nearly 3 1/2 hours to drive 170 miles you know you're in for some windy roads. Wasn't too bad going, didn't enjoy it much coming back in the dark though. It was quite a relief to get stuck behind a lorry at one point.

Saturday. Oxford United vs AFC Wimbledon. Oxford going for 5 wins on the bounce, no idea how that's happened.

Mighty Wakefield Trinity 30 Nefarious Wigan 20 last night and a crowd that was nowhere near the five and a half thousand claimed. Heroics from cult hero 'Big' David Fifita won us the game and took us joint third in t'Super League.

During a lull in the first half I made the call to drag my parents over to watch Blackpool v Peterborough today, so we'll take a picnic and blow the cobwebs off with some bracing sea air and a spot of air hockey on the north pier. And a visit to the two Star Wars collectors' shops there.

                                  I love Blackpool.

Cambridge United vs Newport County with both my sons, the first match for the younger one (aged seven). In fact the only football action he's witnessed for any length of time was the spell when it rained goals during France vs Argentina last summer. I may have some explaining to do, given that both today's teams specialise in scoring nil.

                                      Perth Glory v Newcastle Jets,Sunday 5pm.

The Sydney derby has just finished 1-1, so that means Glory will be crowned Premiers if they win tomorrow afternoon. It'll be Glory's first silverware since the A-League began 14 years ago, which is quite amazing considering Glory were back-to-back champions of the old NSL before its demise in 2004.

Sharks vs Jets, Royal Botanical Gardens, Sydney.

Age old rivalry this. Some nifty footwork from both sides but bad officiating meant some antagonistic play leading to both captains suffering career ending injuries just before the interval.

Second half at a slower pace and degenerated into some ugly brawling before the Jets vice captain taking a shot to the chest and keeling over. The match was then abandoned to wild applause from the crowd.

Bad Vilbel is a twee but soulless part of the Frankfurt conurbation. Imagine a dull version of Dorking. Today they were entertaining Buchonia Flieden.

They do have this wonderful wooden propped cantilever stand.

But most importantly, the far touchline adjoins the main line from Frankfurt to the north, so I mostly watched trains.

Bristol Rovers 3 Bradford City 2

You had to feel sorry for Bradford. They were the better side in the first half and for much of the second, but after a deserved equaliser on 90 minutes they lost to a cracker deep into injury time. My first visit to a Bristol Rovers home game since the Twerton days and I spent a lot of time marveling at the variety of stands scattered about the place, reminiscent of Oxford United’s Manor Ground. Good beer in the Drapers Arms beforehand.

Yeah my friend described the Mem as looking like it was built out of bits left over from other stadia.

I haven't been to a game this weekend. Missed TNS pooping Barry's Euro qualification party last night. Apparently the floodlights popped again but the game could continue.

                                                  Whitley Bay 1-3 Shildon

Shildon scored after ten minutes and then absolutely nothing happened until they doubled their lead right on half time. Both these goals came from the impressive Billy Greulich-Smith, he provided the assist for their third and then proceeded to spend the final half hour playing at right back. It was the last game of the season for both teams and they marked it with a fracas with a couple of minutes remaining - a Bay player got a straight red for stamping and there were a couple more bookings.

Whitley Bay is a rather nice ground, they've got a proper old style main stand with seating at the back and a paddock in front, although you can't really stand there as modern dug outs block the view. They have some cover on the opposite side and put the club name on that too. Friendly club, huge clubhouse, impressive programme shop. Pitch was in fantastic nick for the time of year, better than many clubs well above them in the pyramid. The nearby rugby club were evidently at home as there were occasional shouts and whistles from that direction.

Anyway, how's about them Millwalls, eh?
