Getting in and out of Southampton was fun. Trouble with using a club ground for an International is there are a lot more people coming to the game from outside of Town, so finding somewhere to park was challenging. The Motorway junction was closed leaving Southampton, which I'd hope wasn't planned in advance.

The motorway junction was closed due to a vehicle fire, so I'm certainly hoping it wasn't planned in avance.
Another trouble with using a club ground for England games is that people who live near the ground, and might "get their chance" to see an England game actually can't, because there are only 30,000 tickets and they've all gone to the regular England fans. So 30,000 of the same people as usual have to go further than usual, while all the locals watch it in the pub.

For the playoffs teams (other than group winners) get moved up into playoff position in league order, don't they? The flaw in this seems to be that (if as seems likely at the moment) only two teams from league A miss out, it will be two mid-table nations from league B (like Wales) who will be bumped up, whereas teams lower in league B (like the Irelands) could find themselves in the league B playoffs. So have in theory benefitted from doing worse in the Nations League.

I think it's the other way round.
If 11 teams from NL 'A' qualify along with 8 from 'B', all the remaining A and B teams get a play off. The remaining teams from B contest that play off, while 3 teams from C join the A play-off. If 2 or 3 more teams from C or D surprise us and qualify (Kosovo and Norway, say) then Czechia and Sweden would go into the B play off with Bosnia and Wales, while NI and the South are bumped to A at Hungary and Romania's expense
Possible qualifiers
Group A- England, Czechia
Group B- Ukraine, Portugal
Group C- Germany, Netherlands
Group D- Switzerland, Denmark
Group E- Croatia, Slovakia
Group F- Spain, Sweden
Group G- Poland, Austria
Group H- Turkey, France
Group I- Belgium, Russia
Group J- Italy, Finland*
* currently ranked in Nations League 'C'
If so play-offs would include
League A- Iceland, Israel**, Hungary**, Romania**
League B- Bosnia, Wales, Irish R, Norn Iron
League C- Scotland, Norway, Serbia, Bulgaria
League D- Georgia, Norn Macedonia, Kosovo, Belarus
** currently ranked in Nations League 'C'Last edited by Duncan Gardner; 11-09-2019, 09:22.

It was indeed a good save, however.

Still can't fully wrap my head around it, even with Dunc's explainer. If Kosovo qualify automatically, does that mean Luxembourg get in the playoffs? And do they just play the other league D teams or does it shuffle around?

- A long way from Utopia.
- India, Ireland & numerous, numerous ABscenarios...
- Far too many, currently...
The most bizarre qualification criteria ever?
See the "Ingerland should win Euro 2020" bandwagon started up over the weekend, in the red tops.
Given the Final/Semi is at Wembley etc.

The convoluted system is basically
a) a 'backstop' for any temporarily off-form high flyer, combined with
b) nice little bonus for a couple of regular also-rans, with the get out that
c) anyone gurning that the easiest tourney ever to qualify for isn't fair will look silly. If you aren't one of the 20 best teams in this qualifying tournament you don't belong in an elite competition even if Luxembourg are in it

@ George C: 20 best teams plus 2 also rans as I said plus 2 others. Who might be either unlucky in their qualifying group (losing on count back), or absolutely shit, before reviving in March

Yes, they all did well in the Nations League. Its C & D sections were a bit mediocre like. If often entertaining
Agreed, I've always preferred 16 team finals. Qualifying could still be in 10 groups- winners qualify, runners up to play off, last place to host or wildcard

Wiki:
Path formation[edit]
...- Group winners cannot form a path with a team from a higher league.
- If four or more teams from a league enter the play-offs, a path with four teams from the league in question must be formed.
- Additional conditions may be applied, subject to approval, including seeding principles and the possibility of final tournament hosts having to be drawn into different paths.
With these conditions, the draw procedure is as follows, starting with League D and working up to League A:[6]- Form a path with four teams from the same league.
- If there are more than four teams qualified in a given league, draw which teams will participate in the play-off path of that league.
- Remaining teams are drawn into a path of a higher league.

UEFA.com:
*In the current scenario, a draw would decide which of Bulgaria, Israel or Hungary would fill the empty slot in Path C, which would compete in Path B and which would go into Path A.

Providing an "easy" path for big nations who have fucked up their qualifying campaigns has been UEFA's playoff model for at least 20 years now. It takes a campaign of truly stunning ineptitude for one of the star nations to be absent from a tournament in the 21st century (Italy in 2018, England in 2008 and Holland various times).
For this reason, it wouldn't at all surprise me to see any Path A teams who miss out on automatic qualification to suddenly find their playoff bracket full of Path C/D duffers rather than more dangerous Path B nations.
