The secret behind England's improved form of late - regular Chubby Checker sessions:

Luxembourg's relative upturn in fortunes continues - they started with a 2-1 win over Lithuania. They haven't a hope in hell of qualifying from a group containing Portugal, Ukraine and Serbia, but it seems they're no longer the walkovers they traditionally were.

I thought it was a nice touch allowing Slough Industrial Estate to host the Republic game.

Lovely views of the Rock from the ground. I still don't quite understand how Gibraltar are playing international football when Jersey, Guernsey, the Isle of Man and the Falkland Islands don't seem that bothered - just because they asked to?

            Pretty much so.

It also suits the long-term political goals of the Spanish Federation to have them in UEFA in a way that wouldn't be true for France and the Channel Islands, for instance.

Can you explain that Ursus? What evidence is there that France would be particularly irked by Guernsey or Jersey joining the circuit?

Geography is a factor. Channel Islands and IoM can easily be considered offshore Islands of England. Gibraltar can't.

                It's the other way 'round.

France doesn't give a monkey's about the Channel Islands, whereas Gibraltar's participation in UEFA is seen by some as strengthening Spain's position as to the anachronism of its current status.

Spain then shouldn't have a problem in facing Gibraltar in international competition.

                    Thanks, with you now.

As I suggested, the anachronism can be put as considering Gib as part of England . As it clearly isn't part of Spain either, separate status in UEFA can follow logically

Sporting, you aren't really suggesting that Spain demonstrate serious ideological consistency, are you?

                        Hah, of course not!

How many countries and their clubs are kept apart as far as possible in international tournaments? Israel and others, Russia and Ukraine...more?

The only positive from Slovakia's point of view at half-time in Cardiff is that Wales have only scored one. Wales quicker to everything and moving from defence to attack with just 2 or 3 simple passes.

Armenia and Azerbaijan are another currently "forbidden" pairing.

As far as I know there have never been any forbidden pairings in Latin America, despite various border conflicts in the region. Happy to be proved wrong.

Guatemala doesn't even recognize the right of Belize to exist but they play each other, with suitably dramatic CONCACAF music over the top...

Even against San Marino, Scotland are painfully ineffective.

Slovakia should have equalised in the second-half in Cardiff, but then Wales could have had a 2nd goal. Fair result if only for the first-half.

Russia have won 4-0 in Kazakhstan, which throws Thursday's result into an even less flattering light for Scotland (if that were at all possible).

Only Scotland could score a breakaway goal against San Marino...

OTF favourites Israel beat Austria 4-2, which is something of a shock. It's not the toughest of groups (other teams are Poland, Latvia, Slovenia and North Fruit Salad). It would be "interesting" if Israel qualified for a major tournament, in terms of protests, controversy and the like.

Hungary beat Croatia 2-1. Crappy, but reasonably exciting, game.

Their first win over Croatia (Yugoslavia) in almost eighty years, apparently.

Yes. Tremendous away win for Scotland against the mighty Dan Marino. I think we could go all the way now. Oh, here's the nurse with my tablets.

regarding Gibraltar etc, I honestly don't know why they are treated differently to the Channel Islands and IOM. Although please note that these are crown dependencies of the UK and not just of England.

Croatia, Hungary and Slovakia have all started with one win and one defeat. Does that open up the group for Wales, provided they can pick up away points? Three successive 1-0 away defeats for Slovakia now, and they had 3 odd-goal away defeats in the WC campaign too. If they don't get that sorted, they'll miss out again.
