Isn't there an apochryphal tale involving Duncan McKenzie at Everton?

Half time team talk and Gordon Lee lays into them one by one

McKenzie claimed he'd played quite well (among others)

    Until a defender says quitely

    Sorry boss.

    It's all my fault

I've just let down a team of fucking world beaters.

KD was giving a long explanation on strategy, Les looked at the player opposite him and both started to giggle. KD, clearly pissed off, said "What's the joke Les?" Ferdinand tried to wriggle out of it, "It's nothing boss." No. Let's all share the humour." "Well, boss, I'm sorry but I didn't understand a word you said." He left for Spurs not long after that.
Aw man that is depressing on so many levels. Not least because he won nothing in the game for all his attributes. But also a time when leaving Newcastle for Spurs was accepted as a step down.

I agree 100% with AdC about the obstruction rule. If the same move was made in the center of the park that's made near the goal line, that action would be called for sure. Adding to this where it happens on the pitch issue: I can't understand why the refs insist on booking a player for almost any penalty. Yes, it's a penalty but if the same foul occurred elsewhere most of the fouls would not include a yellow card. When I've posted this complaint before others have said the location of the foul often builds in an unsportsmanlike dimension. That's true when a player from the defending team pulls down an attacking player in the box (although if an attacking player pulls down a defender that attacking player is only called for a foul, not issued a card) but sometimes a tackle is just a mis-timed tackle and certainly can't be considered unsportsmanlike. It seems to me that the issuing of a card for any penalty (minor or major) has increased dramatically in recent years.

We had one of those fellas sent off yesterday. Chris Domogalla, head of performance.

Indeed, it should have been the assistant first team coach.

I hope folk realise that, in twenty-five years' time, you'll all be hankering for how things are now. (Well, those of you still alive will be.)

Possibly a moot point in as little as three months' time.

That seems to imply you think this thread is full of purely nostalgic reminiscing, which it really isn't.

They won't set up the EuroSuperDuperDooInspectorGadget League this year. 2022 I reckon, when any club not currently owned by a sheikh has had its representatives return from the Qatar World Cup with a suntan, a toy camel and the promise of a £2.3bn investment.

Well, it was (obviously) a flippant comment, but the majority of early comments seem to point toward negative developments in the game - or at least phenomena that people don't seem to like. Perhaps I misread them.

Nowhere did I mention 'nostalgic reminiscing'.

I hate the "he felt a touch he has a right to go down" phrase. Not because I think it's wrong necessarily, but more because of the fact that refs won't blow for a foul if a player is impeded but tries to stay on his feet. Meaning that if a player is impeded he has to throw himself to the floor for the free-kick/penalty.

This also leads to genuine fouls being ruled as dives because of the poor acting ability of the player who is actually fouled.

Hence my use of the word "imply".

The majority of the thread (and the interesting bit for me) has been about laws and (mis)interpretation.

I think you mean 'infer' - ie, on your part.

                              But, ne'er mind.

Did players always use to take throw-ins ten yards or so further forward from where the ball went out of play?

That's always been part of the game, there was a bloke who used to sit near me in the 80s and 90s and virtually every throw in to the opposition on our side of the pitch he'd stand up and bellow "where's he going ref?" Whether it was being taken at the correct spot or not.

When did the team group-huddle before the kick off originate?

And what are they all saying? "Right, their number 7 is f'ing good, let's make sure somebody nails him early on (or doors)"

I love it when the other team has a pre-match huddle. My team almost always wins. Maybe it signals a lack of confidence.

I also like it when the opposition has a complicated warm-up cone lay-out. We always win those too. Hyper-organisation failing to compensate for player quality perhaps.
