Tragedy at Flamengo

A fire in the early hours of this morning at Flamengo's training centre, the Ninho do Urubu, has killed 10 people.

The buildings affected were where Flamengo youth players between the ages of 14 and 17 were sleeping.

Three boys have been rescued, one of them a 14 year-old with serious injuries.

The training centre had been without light and water due to the heavy storms in Rio.

It could have been even worse. Training yesterday and today was cancelled because of the weather and several boys with families close by went home for the night.

One of the players who escaped said the fire started in an air conditioning unit.

Six of the ten victims have now been identified. Three were 17, one was 15 and two were 14 years old.
