    We're a Selling League Now! MLS 2019

All right, if the Germans are starting to get shirty about obsolescent thread titles, I guess it's time to start anew.

Going from being a league that paid no transfer fees but high DP salaries to a league that pays big transfer fees to (mainly) Latin American clubs in order to buy cheapish (in salary terms) young players who can then be sold on for even bigger fees is, I think, a pretty big deal. It's about going from being a colder version of the Qatari league, to being a league of Sevillas and Udineses. The shift in mentality (and the kinds of skills required of GMs) is pretty big. We're still a waystation, but on on the way up, not on on the way down

(Alternately, we're trying as a league to occupy the position in the global football production that Boca and River used to play and I;m not sure there actually is that much serious young talent which hasn't been hoovered up by Europe).

Anyways, time for Inca to bless the thread.

Milton Valenzuela wrecked his knee so Columbus sent allocation money to Seattle for Waylon Francis.

Philly signed Marco Fabian off Eintracht Frankfurt and a defender from the German lower leagues.

Matt Polster signed for Rangers; and Celtic signed a Chicago homegrown and wanted to loan him back to Nashville. Until MLS HQ intervened, saying you're already a part of the league and Chicago still has his rights by making him a (seriously lowball) contract offer. He got lent to Charlotte Independence instead.

Nashville will play their debut season at the Titans stadium, Beckham FC are probably going to play at Florida International University until their place is built, and Beckham himself is getting a statue outside the former HDC.

It costs NYCFC a million a game to use Yankee Stadium, payable to their landlords.

Vancouver is chasing Bryan Ruiz and possibly Fredy Montero again.

Toronto signed Terrence Boyd for only 200K/year in salary.

Toronto FC tryng to makes Alejandro Pozuelo of Genk their new third DP. Presumably there's another TAM striker waiting somewhere in the wings, but it's getting awfully close to the start of the season (Feb 18 vs. Independiente of Panama)

It's looks as if the Caps squad this year will have maybe three or four players, at most, left over from the Robinson era.

          That's a good thing, isn't it? Mostly?

            I guess we'll find out.

Robinson tended to create personal loyalty to himself rather than team loyalty. When he was fired inevitably the team blew up.

Darlington Nagbe wants traded to Columbus.

Minnesota have imported Vito Mannone to keep goal for them for some unearthly reason.

DC claimed Chris McCann off waivers from Atlanta and have brought in Quincy Amarikwa to back up Rooney.

RBNY signed a Danish forward, Montreal loans in a striker from (shock) Bologna.

The weird CONCACAF europa league thing in the fall that gives the winner a CCL spot is going to expand to 22 teams, one of which will be the CPL champion.

Portland Thorns are hosting the usual preseason tournament involving themselves, the US U-23's, Chicago Red Stars, and Reign FC. Who are no longer the Seattle Reign, having been moved to Tacoma to the same baseball stadium where the Sounders reserves are going to play. And have had 2 of the Sounders owners individually buy chunks of the team.

Bordeaux is sending their women's team over her for a couple games in March, one v Washington Spirit.

As mentioned on the weekend matchgoing thread, I'm off to watch that in a bit. If you see an Oxford United shirt in the crowd, that's probably me...

Lyon's madcap owner released a presentation outlining how he plans to grow the whole OL setup over the next few years; one way of which is putting a Lyon women's team in the NWSL.

TFC severely CONCACAF'd tonight in Panama, losing 0-4.

The 3rd division Peter Wilt tried to start back in the day finally got certification from the USSF, and the NISA will start in the fall. The Philly team is the ASL Philadelphia Fury and will play at Franklin Field. Atlanta, Charlotte, and New England are the only announced teams so far.

Audi Field is likely to host a USMNT Gold Cup warmup in June, Cincinnati the other. A DCU friendly with Real Betis is being worked on, and there might be 2 Spirit games there this year as well.

The USSF is throwing a bunch of money at broadcasting the Open Cup this year.

DCU v Real Betis is likely to be May 22nd; on the same day Minnesota plays Hertha Berlin.

Philly traded C.J. Sapong to Chicago for $450K of allocation money; Portland traded an international slot to DC for $150K of allocation money.

Temperature for tomorrow's Independiente v. TFC game is predicted to be -10C qith a light wind. Possibly we can overcome the 0-4 deficit by playing an all-Canadian roster while the Panamanians freeze to death.

Something is deeply deeply rotten in the state of British Columbia
Over the years, I've written this blog a million times. Horrifying. It should be fairly easy to connect the dots to find who "Coach Billy" is. In Canada over the past week or so this has issue has received a fair amount of attention (see below). Not as much as should, and I'll be surprised if it's still news by next week. Not many people want to think about it, they'd rather turn away and pretend it doesn't happen.

At least 222 coaches who were involved in amateur sports in Canada have been convicted of sexual offences in the past 20 years involving more than 600 victims under the age of 18, a joint investigation by CBC News and Sports has revealed.

The Whitecaps mealy-mouthed response this morning:

“The well-being of our staff and athletes is of paramount importance. As a club, we hold ourselves accountable to a respectful workplace policy of the highest standard and expect the same from our staff and athletes. Any matter arising which may be in contravention to this policy goes through a rigorous assessment and, where appropriate, action is taken.”

Quincy Amarikwa is officially DCU property, finally.

The Sounders reserve team is now known as Tacoma Defiance, after their move.

The USSF offered to underwrite a Copa America Centenario re-run in 2020, but CONMEBOL turned them down. CONMEBOL did, however, give permission for an Ecuadorian league game to be played in New Jersey April 14.

Chicago has almost locked up importing Nicholas Gaitan from China.

Hibs want to sign Jonathan Spector off Orlando.

The Galaxy (and Dallas) currently have 4 DP's signed, and resolving that problem for LAG is turning into an ungodly mess.

Jozy Altidore re-signs in Toronto til 2022.

And LA resolves their problem by buying out and eating Gio Dos Santos's contract.

Colorado waived Shkelzen Gashi; if no one picks him up, they have to eat his contract.

Nick Rimando is retiring after this year.
