With Man City and Chelsea in the League Cup final, and a fair bet that either of them or Man United will go on to win the FA Cup, 7th place in England could get a Europa League place again this year. At the moment just 4 points seperate Wolves in 7th from West Ham in 12th. Is Europe - especially Europa League qualifying in August- still the incentive it ought to be? You'd hope it would be at least for Bournemouth, who've never played in Europe, or Watford, who got there once in the 80s?

It didn't seem to do Burnley much good. Three qualifying rounds.
I also understand that from 2021 the 7th placed team (or League Cup winner) might be dropped to EL2, which would seem truly pointless as it's really a competition to provide leagues below the Top 10 with some exposure AFAIK.
But it depends on the individual club and its self-image. If that 7th is realistically the only one you'll achieve in the next 20 years or so (see Burnley), why not milk it? OTOH it might turn out that the Kudos of "being in Europe" is purely symbolic and you have to work out whether a symbolic moment is worth the costs in injuries and fatigue.Last edited by Satchmo Distel; 31-01-2019, 12:58.

I thought it was a brilliant adventure despite getting the worst possible draw in each round. And we should have got through to the group stages but luck wasn’t on our side - and Olympiakos er, knew how to deal with European referees...
