Weekend Matchgoing (albeit the wrong sport) Thread

I'm taking my boy to Guildford Flames v Coventry Blaze in the Elite Ice Hockey League on Saturday evening as we haven't seen any hockey all season.

I did look at any local football I could try and squeeze in prior to the 6pm face-off but there wasn't much available (or at least nothing I thought I should drag my son to in current temperatures) so I'm taking him to see 'Spider-man : Into The Spiderverse' instead.

Chelsea V Newcastle at the Bridge. Sincerely hope I'm wrong but it's got whatever the opposite of goalfest is written all over it.

Bury vs the team who are never asked any questions for the pre-season issue. They're second, we're third. Should be good.

For the first time since the end of October I'll be out in the open watching sport, Dublin begin their Gaelic football season in the pre season O'Byrne cup on Saturday evening against Meath.

Heh, I go to many worse places than Dronfield during the season. South Elmsall (Frickley Athletic) most obviously.

Actually I've just discovered it's the Sandy Lane derby tomorrow - Handsworth Parramore v Worksop Town. Might do that instead as it's an easier trip and an earlier finish which would be handy given an evening arrangement.

                Northampton v Carlisle

A visit to draw specialists Northampton for managerless Carlisle who are trying to equal a club record of seven successive wins, minus a couple of the players who’ve got them those results but whose loan spell has come to an end. In charge of the home side is Keith Curle, who was generally popular in his time at Brunton Park, albeit underachieving.

My first visit to Sixfields since 1998 I think, oh to have a squad featuring the talents of Jansen, Delap and Allan Smart like we did then.

X-Roads Warriors vs North Village Rams on Sunday afternoon. The X-Roads coach and chairman have not been endearing themselves to the BFA recently, writing letters complaining long and hard that all the refs are out to get them (only happens when they lose or draw apparently, when they win, all is well with the world).

Burnley vs Fulham. A bottom of the table clash/six pointer with Fulham long, long, long overdue a win at t'Turf.

Bath City vs East Thurrock. We are unbeaten in 5, third in the form and actual table; they are 20th but crucially are unbeaten in 3 and got their first win in ages last week. We are playing fantastically presently being unbeaten over and since the Christmas period which is all the more amazing considering we have such a small squad anyway and were suffering from injuries and suspension. However, I do have a feeling the wheels may come off at some stage and, for some reason, tomorrow looks like a possible potato skin.

I've heard good things about the Spiderverse movie and would welcome Ray's take on it.

I've got options tomorrow. Proper local side Grange Albion in an FAW Trophy match at lunchtime. Barry v Aberystwyth in the last Welsh Premier game before "the split" in the evening. Possibly a twofer. (Not going to Cardiff v Huddersfield in the afternoon which will either be an antifootballist's dry dream, or an 11 goal thriller.)

OTOH, Mrs Thistle has had a tough week so I might bin off footy options and take her to look at the ocean down Porthcawl way, or something.

                          Horsham v Whyteleafe

Fourth versus third with the teams separated by goal difference, and both averaging more than two goals per game. Nailed on 0-0 snooze fest.

Does next Tuesday count? If so, then Valencia - Sporting Gijón in the second leg of their match in the Copa del Rey. Hoping that Sporting hold on to their 2-1 first leg victory but if Marcelino has been ousted by then the " entrenador nuevo victoria segura" thingy is bound to kick in. And let's be honest Valencia should win even if they play a team of subs. It's cold here at the moment so I will be well wrapped up for the 9.30 (local time) kick off.

Our first home game of 2019 against the only team to beat us at Whaddon Road in our 15/16 Conference winning season.

Swindon v Lincoln tomorrow. Think last time I went to County Ground was over 10 years ago when Jamie Forrester's winner was enough for us to go top of the league. Naturally we failed in the play-offs. At least this year, we're already top, but I think it's going to be lot harder than the match at Sincil Bank earlier this season.

(Ice) hockey. Penn State vs Michigan State. Tonight and tomorrow night.

Sadly, Aarne Talvitie blew out his knee playing for Finland and will probably be out for the year.

Albion Rovers v Peterhead. Every point a prisoner from now on for Albion. The dreaded Lowland League is coming into view over the horizon.

If you go and see Porthcawl Town Athletic's home home game against Cardiff Corries tomorrow at Locks Lane, you can walk 5 minutes to Rest Bay which is a lovely beach (as long as you don't look too close at Port Talbot to the West) and is also the location for the photo shoot for the cover of "Heaven Up Here" by Echo and the Bunnymen (unless it's one of the other beaches in Porthcawl). There is also Sker House nearby which is the inspiration for a couple of ghost stories, one being a book called 'The Maid Of Sker". I give you this as material to get Mrs Thistle along so you can say "Oh, look, there's a match on". If you walk in the opposite direction from the sea away from the ground, you get to Ray and my old house but I doubt that will win her over.

This match comes a week too late as I would have loved it to have been us that got Gary Rowett the sack.

I know Rest Bay well and really love it. Especially the moonscape rocks. I'm not planning a switcheroo and sneaking to a game but that is helpful info.

I'm on the ice hockey trail too - today is the last day of the women's under 18 division 1B tournament in Dumfries. We've got day tickets but might only make it for the last game (GB v the Netherlands). The biggest game is on first (France v Norway to decide the group), with Poland v China in between.

                                                  Zilina 0 SFC Opava 1

First live football for me in five weeks. The first winter friendly before the Slovak league restarts on Feb 16th and the Czech league on Feb 9th. Opava are just below halfway in the Czech league, but would be top 2 or 3 in Slovakia. They took the lead after 19 minutes and continued to be the better side until the last 15 minutes when Zilina finally put them under some sustained pressure. Zilina substituted all ten outfield players at half-time, while the visitors brought players on at regular intervals through the second-half.

Impressive pitch-clearing efforts too ; we'd had a metre or so of snow in the week before the game, but the 4G surface had been swept clean.
