Probably not that surprising that no one's started a thread about him on here, but the news that Nigel Cassidy died a couple of days ago, aged 62, came as a shock to me. He was one of my childhood heroes, having played for Oxford from 1970 - 1974. He died after an illness caused by an insect bite while travelling abroad.
He always struck me as a very flamboyant player, but on the few occasions I met him he was quiet, and quite shy. Him, Derek Clarke, David Roberts, Brian Heron, Roy Burton, and Hugh Curran, formed the basis of the first United side that I can clearly remember. Their haircuts will never be seen again. Here's an article I wrote about him a few months back.
