    A quick Rogin threadstarter quiz

What are these the only five teams to achieve in English football since 1977 (hint - that year is not chosen at random as "year zero")?

    1981 - Ipswich Town
    1995 - Manchester United
    1997 - Newcastle United
    1998 - Manchester United
    2003 - Arsenal

Does it have something to do with not winning the title although they were so-and-so many points ahead at such-and-such stage of the season?

Not winning the title is the common denominator, but it's not to do with points.

        Ermmmm....

Losing fewer games than the previous season?

Finishing second is the common denominator, right? Still not got it though ...

76-77 was the first season of goal difference rather than goal average ... is that anything to do with it?

Edit: Having a better goal difference than the champions?

Yes, Jorge's got it. I was rather surprised by that - obviously you expect the champions, as the team to have earnt to the most points, to normally have the largest goal difference as well, but it's hardly an automatic correlation, is it. Yet, only the 5 champions from the years I mentioned (in these 32 seasons since it went to goal difference) haven't managed both.

The reason it was a thread starter quiz, was because I wondered if, in any comparative discussion of "greatest" club sides, goal difference over the season isn't a bad proxy, for who were the best sides (rather than points earnt).

With no prejudice, here's the "league table" of the teams who've finished the top division in England over those 32 years with the highest goal differences. Does this correspond to a fair ranking of who were the better teams, do you reckon?

              1. Liverpool, 1978-79, +69
              2. Liverpool, 1987-88, +63
              3. Chelsea, 2004-05, +57
              4. Manchester United, 2007-08, +56
              4. Arsenal, 1990-91, +56
              6. Manchester United, 1999-00, +52
              6. Liverpool, 1985-86, +52
              8. Liverpool, 1979-80, +51

Not really, no. It's just your latest attempt to put Liverpool top of a league.
