I have always found it strange when clubs are called united, where there is another team in the town/city. Is this not a case of misnoma
Manchester United, Sheffield United etc.
They are clearly not united cities so I am unsure as to why they have got these names. Obviously there are clubs where the "united" tag is correctly applied. Newcastle, West Ham, etc
I have a feeling that Manchester United were called that as they were all, back then, strong socialist trade unionists. The team was still strongly from their railway workers roots. Which is why they picked United over the other possible names. One of the other options was Manchester Celtic, which would have been horrendous.
The official club history from about 1995 or so also says it has to do with the businessmen of the city 'uniting' to save what was then Newton Heath from bankruptcy after a particularly horrendous spell on and off the pitch had almost forced them out of existence.
City played a part as well I believe, so in one sense the 'United' monicker in our case is more accurate than you'd first think.
