And The Expanse just around the corner. A good month to sub to Amazon Prime if you're not already.

The ending is M Night Shalyman (sp obvs) bad but.

Yeah. I'm not sure I would carry on with Amazon if it weren't for that.

Talking of whom, Apple TV are advertising something by him called Servant. I think that’s what it was. The poster is a baby.

Noah Baumbach’s new film Marriage Story. It’s very good. It’s about divorce so it is kind of a downer, of course, but Scarlett Johannsen and Adam Driver are excellent.

It may be a bit hard to relate to because it’s about a New York playwright and a Hollywood actress. I suppose it may be loosely based on Baumbach’s divorce from Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Just finished the marvelous mini-series The Loudest Voice about Roger Ailes and the creation of Fox News. Russell Crowe plays Ailes, Sienna Miller plays his wife Beth, and Naomi Watts plays Gretchen Carlson. It's done over 7 episodes, each focusing on a pivotal year in the station's history, and concludes with Ailes dismissal due to sexual assault allegations. It's really well done, and Crowe (who I typically don't like) is fantastic as the repugnant repub Ailes. We PVR'd it, so I'm not sure where to direct you to find it. But it's worth the time.

Oh, and Seth MacFarlane is in it in a dramatic role. What's his deal anyway? He looks and acts like a smarmy cartoon villain, but apparently is a decent lefty.

Finished S3 of The Crown which overall I really enjoyed. I did think the last episode jumped around time-wise between 1973 and 1977 without necessarily making this clear. It doesn’t need to be 100% linear, but:

                    **CROWN SPOILER**
                    Margaret’s romance with Roddy Llewellyn appeared to last a couple of weeks whereas from their meeting until the Jubilee (end of the episode) was five years;
Harold Wilson appeared to become PM (1974) and resign almost immediately 1976).

Actually can there be spoilers when it’s based on fact? Still think they should have done Anne’s kidnapping. Erin Doherty has been one of the stars of S3 and would have done a great job with this.

                      Laura Dern terrifies me.

Because of Big Little Lies, or something else?

I was offered 6 months free by EE, worth it just for 'The Expanse' and S4 will bring me relief on the likely dark Friday the 13th to come...

We've just started watching Stranger Things. Four episodes in and I can't look at myself in a mirror any more (always my reaction to scary film or TV, I look too freaked out, so I don't look like myself and I imagine seeing horrible things behind myself).

That's such a good show. Season 3 was just over-the-top nostalgic loveliness.

She played a similar character in that - someone who can come off as very friendly and outgoing who would pull your beating heart out of your chest to win.

I've finally located Season 3 of 'Get Shorty' online, I would normally wait until a UK broadcast but this run has already finished in the U.S. with no sign of start date over here being announced so I took the plunge. Watched the first episode last night and it's hit its stride already.

Season 7 of Ray Donovan is three episodes in on Sky Atlantic, it's still slower and less sparky in New York than when it was set in LA but is building up nicely.

Agreed. I'm still enjoying it, but I liked it better as a Cali series. Also, I'm not sure what the compelling story arc is any more. It's sort of turned into an episodic show.

Emo Vader was just fantastic. I now have a Sondheim earworm.

But, as has often been the case with Simon's work, the ending was kind of weak. The second to last episode ended with a bit of a shocker. The producers probably could have moved some of the last episode into that second to last one and had a better ending, combining the two.

For me the last two episodes were exactly right, in fact they'll be my mental touchstone to the show. The, almost elegaic conclusion, with Blondie's version of The Sidewalks of New York as a soundtrack, was so fine it almost moved me to tears. You could tell the series was a genuine labour of love for New York for many of the writers and cast who have a longstanding connection with New York. I'm a bit surprised it hasn't gleaned more attention, maybe because of the subject? I suspect it'll either be quickly forgotten — which would be a real shame — or its reputation will grow slowly over time. I hope it's the latter.
Okay, I can finally chime in. First, loved the whole damn thing. I think it was criminally unappreciated, but maybe that'll change over time. And the final sequence was just marvelous. One of the most moving endings I've ever seen. And yes, the second to last ep was a shocker. Contrarily, I don't much rate Maggie Gyllenhaal. She just does nothing for me - emotionally or intellectually - and I simply couldn't buy her as some porn goddess who was so desirable that she had to be pulled out of retirement.

Franco continues to amaze me. I hope we don't have to endure Gandolfini's son for the rest of our lives. And I love Chris Bauer in almost anything.

I finally got around to Transparent. The first series so far is very dark, perhaps to illustrate that heteronormative family life is not so great. Tambor is great and another example of why you have to separate art from the person creating it.

Another mum recommended 'dead to me' on Netflix and I watched the first episode last night. It's sort of bizarre wish fulfillment where a mum gets to hang out with a female friend on the beach smoking pot because her husband died. I enjoyed the first episode, but, but...

One of the main characters, Jen, is shown to have two boys, one of whom is clearly under the age of 10, and their dad has just died. Yet, she seems to be leaving them at home entirely on their own while she drives around listening to head-banging music and photographing cars with suspicious dents. Who is looking after the children??? Who? Who?

It's not intended to be taken too seriously, as I recall.

I thought it was entertaining enough, but it was pretty derivative of a lot of other recent stuff. The cast was great.

Wasn’t there a nanny? Or the kids were in school. Something like that.

IIRC there's her mother-in-law, who's kind of a cliché, and undermines her relationship with her children.
