New on Netflix in the UK:

Watched and enjoyed - Snowpiercer (particularly Tilda Swinton's batshit villain turn as Deirdre-Barlow-meets-Margaret-Thatcher).

Watched and loathed - Polar (repugnant action film that Mads Mikkelsen should've run screaming from; think John Wick directed by a drunk thirteen-year-old Zack Snyder).

I thought that the second episode of Chernobyl was very good. Much less science- and surname-based confusion and much more quiet clarity about the gravity of the situation and the terrible choices that would have to be made. The meeting with Gorbachev in which the lead scientist spelled out the potential consequences (the Ukraine, Belarus, the Baltic states and much of Eastern Europe being uninhabitable for the next 100 years) was particularly strong.

Has Gorby ever talked in depth about the incident?

Is that the one with Matt Lucas as the pantomime baddie? Such a bad, bad film and not in a good way. Nothing makes any sense and the torture porn sections are just gratuitous and horrible. Hated it so much.

No, it's like tracteurgarcon says. Not good bad, just awful. I found it smug, gratuitous and demeaning, and I like good bad films.

...as well as Snowpiercer, I quite enjoyed The Wandering Earth - the big Chinese sci-fi blockbuster. It's no more intelligent than, say, 2012, but the special effects are dialled up to about a million, and it's enjoyable fun. I mean, who wouldn't enjoy a film about the earth being propelled by giant engines away from the dying sun, and a crew of misfits and military survivors being the only ones who can save the world when the engines start failing? It's basically an Armageddon staycation.

Penultimate episode of The Big Bang Theory last night, a show that has run its course 2 or 3 times over. Last episode airs next Thursday in the UK.

We've started watching Bordertown, a Finnish cop show set on the Russian border. Just reached the end of the first storyline (it appears that one storyline goes over multiple episodes but does not last for a whole series). I liked it, some good characters, and well acted. The main cop is a kind of much much less annoying and much much more human version of Cumberbatch's Sherlock.

I'm currently watching Samurai Jack on the Channel 4 site. The plot isn't anything special but my, it looks and sounds beautiful. It's a complete package, backgrounds, character animation, colour, the way it plays with aspect ratios. The appearance really shines in episodes that are just fights but my favourite episodes have been the lighter ones. I'm just really impressed.

As much as you're right about it having run it's course on a few occasions, I have to admit I'm going to miss TBBT. It's been a staple of my Thursday nights since it's first episode was shown in the UK in 2008. On the same night as the first episode of The Inbetweeners if I remember correctly.

Annoyingly, and whilst it has been telegraphed since the first episode of this series, I've seen a spoiler for the ending already.

Oh, I used to love Samurai Jack. The artwork is beautiful. There's one episode with him facing off against three guardians in a tower, all of whom have super senses. There's no dialogue, I think, and the whole thing was really unusually quiet.

I liked the sillier steampunk/sci-fi episodes too - the one where he's turned into a chicken and has to fight his way through gladiatorial combats against other animals; the one where's chased by cowboys on a western-style train; the one where he basically just fights zombies with a Scot with a machinegun. (Or were they robots?)

Started watching Chernobyl last night. I wonder how episode 1 would have made me feel if I had watched during Obama's term instead of during trump's. I can easily see the latter lying to the public about the severity of an incident like that, especially if his administration's policies were responsible.

Currently on BBC4 there is a Wonderland special entitled "Walking With Dogs".

If you can, you should watch it. It's a beautiful, touching, fascinating look at folks walking their dogs on Hampstead Heath. There are some amazing back stories to the people out and about, and there are parts which are incredibly affecting.

                              Highly, highly recommended.

Watched Swimming with Men over the weekend. Excellent stuff. Don't be put off by the idea that it is The Full Monty but with synchronised swimming. It was - at least for me - much better than a pithy one line description.

I liked it too. Saw it at the cinema last year.

(It was the Full Monty with synchronised swimming though. )

Oh, I agree that was the hook, but my reading of it was less the group of men fighting back again unemployment and their situation and more about a group of men finding a way to deal with issues raised by factors internal or external. A reflection of current times where getting men to open up about how they feel and how it's OK to not be OK.

Catching up with the first series of 'No Offence' (Channel 4, 2015). Very enjoyable. Not sure how it stretches to three series, though, based on this foundation.

I watched most of Swimming With Men on a plane, but didn't get to the finish before the flight landed. I never felt a need to see the end of it - it felt harmless enough but just didn't draw me in enough to care.

Yesterday I caught up with the first two episodes of Chernobyl which I thought was very well made - there were a couple of times that I felt liberties were being taken with reality, and I'd like a little more substance on the various processes and switching off of failsafes and other compounded stupidities that led to the disaster. Maybe that will come later.

There is an accompanying podcast which goes into more detail about the episode and explains some of the story vs reality choices.

At least that is what I’m led to believe. I’m desperately waiting for it to come on streaming/iTunes or some such.

Yeah, I caught up with the first two episodes and the second one in particular is excellent, mostly I thought down to Jared Harris and Stellan Skarsgård.

I agree. I went in search of documentaries about Chernobyl and found one on NetFlix about Russia's 'closed cities', which ties into the theme. It's just over an hour long. Worth watching while waiting for the next episode of Chernobyl.

It is called City 40, if anyone is interested.

The third act of A Good Day to Die Hard is set in Chernobyl. Probably not helpful to the discussion though.

Barry finished season 2 right after GOT and it’s a lot more coherent.

Watched Mum S3 Ep 1 last week.

Ep 2 came on last night, and we realised we could watch all of S3 on demand.

Manville and Mullan are terrific. So good in fact that I can forgive some of the dafter character plotlines (Derek, Jason, Kelly).

Reg had some brilliant lines, in particular his rant about badminton.

But it's all about Cathy and Michael. Mullan says so much by barely moving - eg when Cathy indicates she's told Jason and it will all be ok. A delight.
