I agree and disagree with most of that.

Last night on ITV4, I've just seen it advertised in my TV guide (but I've not had time to watch it):
Out of Their Skin
Series 1 - Episode 1
Ian Wright charts the rise of black footballers from Viv Anderson's England debut in 1978, revealing their stories as they challenged attitudes and triggered change.

Anyone else watching HBO's My Beautiful Friend? It's... well, beautifully beautiful. The story of two young girls growing up poor in early 60s Italy. It's constructed and directed with such sensitivity and care I sometimes want to break into applause. Fundamentally it's a young person's view of their world, so most of the actors are kids. I know from anecdotal experience that wrangling children on set is incredibly exhausting, but here they seem so natural, especially the two principals. Highly recommended (note. yes it's subtitled but there's not a lot of exposition so reading is minimal.
We're also eating up The Kominsky Method. Like Stranger Things Netflix is clearly pitching this at a specific demographic — though definitely not the same one. There may not be much there for you if you're under sixty, but if you're over seventy it's pretty funny and very relatable.

The Wire had a few dips whereas The Sopranos was top notch all the way. However, when The Wire was good, it made points about the whole of the American racial structure and its relationship to a dead city and its administration and policing whereas The Sopranos is a particular localized type of masculinity and capitalism.
I do enjoy aspects of The Mayans which blend both race and cartel capitalism so have Wire & Sopranos vibes without the depth of characterization or acting.
My wife and I have also decided to stick with Versailles to the end, and have four episodes left to binge next week.
Vikings is also back (not sure if this will be the last series or no).

Mrs Thistle recently bought Dharma & Greg season 2 on DVD for some good old late 90s American comedy nostalgia. We just watched episode 1 with tea. It's a bit dated but I laughed several times.
We used to record it off the telly in the middle of the night. All the VHS tapes went to the tip ages ago.

I wish the Talking Pictures channel was in HD. Got to see the original Night of the Demon again this week and it's still the atmospheric little cracker it was when I saw it first all those years ago. We're it not for the fact that the TP channel has the kind of visual quality you'd normally find in a worn-out, third-generation pirate video, I'd go back to it more often - it screened The Ghost and Mrs. Muir last week and it had me blubbing like a wuss (damn you, Bernard Herrmann and your melancholy string section). On the minus side, it also screened the Marty Feldman comedy Every Home Should Have One, whose shelf life on my telly lasted 15 minutes after its dated, crappy, listless and unfunny shambolic presence stank the place out.
Nevertheless, I'm curious as to what else might pop up on it in the near future.
