I watched the first two episodes of The Romanoffs, Matt Weiner's new thing. Meh. The acting is good and some of it is interesting, but the main characters are, so far, mostly assholes and it's anthology so it doesn't provide any urgent reason to want to watch the next one since the stories aren't directly related. Besides, the thread that does connect them - that they're all descendants of the the Tsar's family - isn't very compelling, IMO. It's not entirely clear if the writers understand how awful the Romanovs were and how being descended from them isn't really something to be proud of.

If I were a Romanoff/Romanov, I would change my name.

      That would explain it.

I'm pretty sure I saw it on ESPN2 back when it had a separate image and brand, largely built around "eXtreme sports," including surfing.

I think that might be the only thing they get right because the characters who claim to be descended from the tsar are deeply flawed and basically horrible people (so far).

          Well, the transliteration is off

The name ends in a “v” under the current system

I've seen the name on TV a couple of times lately (on the news--not fictional people) and it was spelled with a "v" both times.

I'm going to watch 'Camping' now. I've seen mixed reviews on Twitter, but I just might like it. I sometimes have questionable taste.

Nope. It's horrible. Don't waste your time.

The Marvel Black Widow character is called Romanoff in the recent films, probably the name's highest profile outing of late prior to the series. I think that the comics have tended to favour Romanova, but couldn't swear to it.

One wouldn't expect the people who brought us Latveria to be anything less than 100% reliable in this field.

I just saw an episode of Amy Huberman's new comedy series. It's really rather good. She has a much better idea how to write for herself than the assorted Irish screen writers do.

Surely there are far better sketch and sitcom writers in Ireland than the eejits RTÉ commission. That McSavage thing was only half watchable to study the depths of self loathing a man can sink to. Were he not an Andrews/Tubbs spawn, he’d still be abusing strangers in temple bar and getting his teeth knocked out.

That’s addressed on the show. Romanov is the standard spelling but, apparently, Romanoff is a better approximation of the pronunciation.

If you have no clue how to pronounce Russian names . . .

It sounds more like “off” to be when they say it.

Is that the one written by and starring Julia Davis?

Writing a comedy show has to be just about the hardest form of Television. I don't understand how people can keep working at the same jokes over and over until they long lost sight of what was funny about it in the first place?

Yes. Lena Dunham's version is based on it (kinda like the UK & US Office) but by all accounts it totally misses the point.

Yup, on Sky. The new US one is a remake.

I hate it when they do that. I love Julia Davis. I will find that version and cleanse my brain of the Dunham abomination.
