For conformation of Babylon Berlin's scenes of nightlife, here's Louise Brooks's description. She was there to make Pandora's Box and Diary of a Lost Girl the same year. (1929)

"At the Eden Hotel, where I lived in Berlin, the café bar was lined with the higher-priced trollops. The economy girls walked the street outside. On the corner stood the girls in boots, advertising flagellation. Actors' agents pimped for ladies in luxury apartments in the Bavarian Quarter. Race-track touts at the Hoppengarten arranged orgies for groups of sportsmen. The nightclub Eldorado displayed an enticing line of homosexuals dressed as women. At the Maly, there was a choice of feminine or collar-and-tie lesbians. Collective lust roared unashamed at the theatre. In the revue Chocolate Kiddies, when Josephine Baker appeared naked except for a girdle of bananas, it was precisely as Lulu's stage entrance was described by Wedekind: "They rage there as in a menagerie when the meat appears at the cage."

Has there been discussion on Civilisations? I somehow missed that it was on and have now recorded from the 4th episodes. Has anyone a way to access for a non-UK resident for the first three episodes?

I wish. If anyone does, please let the half beeb allowed Irish contingent know how to access the I-player.

Well, I’m looking more for those specific episodes, ideally through a torrent etc, rather than general iplayer access.

Two strikes for me, I don’t torrent if I can help it. Viruses and Trojans seem a big side effect.

Barry on HBO looks excellent based on the first episode and the many interviews Bill Hader has done to promote it.

He plays a depressed hitman who decides to take an acting class. The teacher is played by Henry Winkler. Barry’s agent or handler or whatever he’s called is played by Stephen Root.

I’m also digging AMC’s The Terror, a fictionalized/fantasized telling of one of the 19th century British naval expedition to find the Northwest passage.

In reality, everyone died of one malady or another, including lead poisoning caused by shoddy work by the supplier of all their canned food supplies.

In the show, there’s also a giant god-monster stalking them.

It’s based on a book, which I haven’t read yet. It just so happens that researchers sponsored by the Canadian government found the remains of the two ships in the last few years. Not sure if the book was written before that or if the discovery yielded any information that might change the story.

I gather the massive success of Walking Dead convincesd them that a horror series could work.

Season 2 of Santa Clarita Diet. No fall off in quality.

See, I'd never even heard of it until Season 2 started promo'ing. Tell me it's not about vampires or zombies, though.

It's kind of about zombies. But not really. It's great.

Yeah. Just finished S2 of Santa Clarita, and it stays top quality all the way through. It doesn't fall anywhere near the trap of becoming a character sit-com. The very end of the last episode is absolute gold.

Watched the first episode of the new season of Silicon Valley last night, and I don't think it was quite at the level of previous seasons. Not enough Gilfoyle and Dinesh, too much focus on getting rid of Erlich.

Leonie Benesch has gone one better than Liv Lisa Fries by appearing in Babylon Berlin, Counterpart and The Crown: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2914059/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t5

I briefly wondered if that was Greta in Counterpart but forgot to check. She doesn't illuminate the screen like LLF I'm afraid.

The final season of The Americans started last night. Looks like it's going to get tense.

Reinforced by the characters they play, I guess. Liv is playing these life force characters and Benesche has this cloud of impending doom. Acting skills might be equal for all we know, but Liv does radiate charisma and natural joy at being alive.

I love it, but L went off it a bit last year. Found it draggy. We're gonna wait until it's all PVR'd and binge it.

I enjoyed episode 1 of the Americans, but it was a little weird trying to remember all the moving parts. Mrs SB was frustrated by the amount of subtitles - she was "If I want to read my TV shows, I'll get a book." I know The Americans has always had a lot of Russians speaking Russian, but even I thought it was a little excessive this week.

Perhaps so. LLF played Sophie Scholl in a series on German women a while back. I'd be interested in seeing how she handled it.

Finished s2 of Jessica Jones this week. It's moved well away from a standard comic book production to deal much more with interpersonal relationships. On the whole a positive direction for sure. Though I've got severe reservations about the janitorial eye-candy and his kid.

My (slight) issues with the show remain the same as they were in s01e01. It's just not credible that embedded operatives would go round murdering people, and where do they keep all their disguises? Otherwise it's great, particular in regard to the main characters' development.

Subtitles don't bother me in the slightest unless they're really bad (ie: hard to read, or too brief.) OTOH, I live with somebody with dyslexia and know they can be a real chore. (Occasionally I'm asked to pause the the action if there's too much text.) More than half of what we watch is subtitled (most of it on Netflix), it offers cultural insights you can't easily get any other way. For example we're currently watching the second season of Occupation, a Norwegian political drama/thriller based on the premise that Russia has — more or less peacefully — occupied Norway.

I suspect that his History of Britain might not hold up when proper historians look at it. Paper thin stuff that was lapped up because nobody else was making serious telly anymore. His history of the Jews was very self-indulgent.

I'm currently having to endure another fecking remake of The Generation Game. Basically, another bloody show where members of the public make an arse of themselves, with "hilarious" results. It's hosted by the annoying Mel and Sue which isn't helping.

In a foul mood though, so that's clouding things further. Still, it's not as fucking shit as that 'Altogether Now' bollocks was.
