*truth be told, I’d feel guilty watching it, like I’d let down Uhtred.
It can be confusing to follow Vikings and The Last Kingdom at the same time, because they cover some of the same history, but I’m trying.

I knocked out the second season of Upload. Great show.

      Yup. Same here.

I watched Turning Red tonight. It's the new Pixar movie released today on Disney Plus.

I can imagine the screaming prudes in America will be incensed that a "children's film" mentions periods and depicts sanitary towels but given that the whole red panda thing is a metaphor for puberty and menses, I thought it worked pretty well - not to the same level as Inside Out worked as an exploration of personality but pretty well.

Anyway, would totally recommend. (Unless you're one of those people who just can't get on with animated films. In which case, I don't think this will convert you.)

Also of note for WOM if no one else, it's set in Toronto.

Yup. Hometown coverage of it has been wall to wall all week. It does look like a good one.

I watched a bit of that. The vibe wasn’t working for me.

Now I’m going to get through Killing Eve.

Ghost Town Anthology. All-French Quebec film. Sloooow mood piece. Starts with a car randomly crashing and unlocks everything from there. Reminded me of A Ghost Story (for vibe/tone) and The Sweet Hereafter (for setting and also vibe). I wouldn’t say it’s a great film, but I thought about it this morning. There are some brilliant scenes.

Catching up on the last of the best pic nominees before the Oscars in a couple of weeks - just Liquorice Pizza to go. Nightmare Alley and West Side Story are both far too long, nice too look at, pointless remakes. Just a bit underwhelmed by almost all of this years selection.

                      I wasn’t underwhelmed by Dune.

I don’t think I can get through West Side Story. I just don’t care for musicals, apparently.

I love the Soviet Sherlock Holmes & Doctor Watson. Sadly Lenfilm got deleted off YouTube but some kind soul has uploaded this at least.

It's very of its time, and very obviously filmed in the Baltic but Livanov and Solomin are perfect as Holmes and Watson.

Yeah. Almost universally, musicals are not my thing. West Side Story is at the better end of the spectrum. But I’m not really qualified to say much beyond that it’s the gayest looking gang war in history.

My problems with Dune were the Mumblecore sound mixing, the fact that it assumed more knowledge of the books and lore than I could remember from reading them 35 years prior, and the fact that it was clearly only half-a-story. Like many of the films it looked spectacular but that’s not really enough for me.

I didn’t detect an issue with the sound. That was a big problem with Tenet, though.

I didn’t think it was hard to follow, but I read the book a few years ago. I felt it explained enough without getting bogged down in exposition, but that is very hard to do.

Still it is easier to follow than, for example, Game of Thrones or King Lear.

I heard those were good. Dude looks exactly like Sidney Paget pictured. I’ve always been a fan Clive Merrison and Michael Williams on BBC radio. Early ‘90s. Bert Cole's adapted most of them. They are on YouTube if you dig around. Superb.

(I remember a Q&A with Peter Davison at ComicCon. I said how great I thought he was in The Adventure of the Reigate Squire and asked what it was like to work with Merrison/Williams. Dude had no clue what I was talking about. Must have just been a two-hour job for him. Whfff- gone. I felt like a proper stalker/fanny. Never meet your radio heroes when they are being TV heroes. I got booed by a helmet-off Cyberman, too. Geeze. Kick a man when he’s down.)

There was too much of a cliff hanger for my liking. In the age of binge watching and streaming I absolutely hate it when a season doesn't wrap up cleanly or end in a way that I know a second series won't happen. I'm not excited about waiting 2 more years for something to pick up again.

One of Tenet's problem s, yes. The others included the stereotype Russian baddie so maybe it'll be cancelled anyway.

I was there to shakedown some flake who owed me money. I arrived and left on a very powerful motorbike. My hot wife was there too. I smoked the entire time even though you’re not allowed to smoke indoors. I definitely didn’t get a picture of me cuddling a guy dressed as chewbacca.

Wouldn't having a Russian oligarch as a villain make it an even more timely/popular choice, rather than lead to it being cancelled?

I thought it was a great, ambitious and absorbing film, if not without flaws ( I've banged on about the sound issues on here before, pun unintended).

The battle at the end is technically incredible. The building being reconstructed then deconstructed was ace. Same with the backwards fight-scene early on. I didn’t love it as a film, but it was a joy to look at. Tailoring was good, too. Agree about the sound. Luckily I had no clue what was going on anyway, so the dialogue just became part of the orchestra.

I'll have a look. For the Soviet series, the characterisation is rather different from the book. Holmes is capable of being jovial, but it makes sense that he'd actually get on with Watson and have a laugh. The first episode handles Watson working out that he lives with a real weirdo, possibly a criminal really well.

Killing Eve would work well in a sportsbook. Every time a new character appears, they could take action on how many minutes or episodes they will survive. The Sopranos would work like that.

The fashion is interesting. All of the men who aren’t wearing Saville Row are wearing at least two unbuttoned shirts on top of each other. Or a jacket that’s more like a shirt.

I’m not sure how I feel about that trend.

Tenet was just exhausting. I’ve seen it two and a half times and am not sure it actually makes sense. I eventually decided that it doesn’t matter.

The Channel 4 documentary on the Jeremy Kyle show is unsurprisingly scathing and he should never work in the media again.

Am I that only one that liked The Witchfinder with Tim Key and Daisy May Cooper? It's got some scathing reviews but I thought it was a lot of fun.

It was fun but not funny. I'm not sure it did enough with it's historical setting either. Which is strange as an obvious inspiration is a field in England which also is semi detached from the time period it's in but also feels very much anchored there.
