    Just watched Nomadland. Brilliant.

Why is it Sky, for all their barrels of cash, can't make a TV series that doesn't look and sound like it cost 8 pence to make?
BBC can do it. Channel 4 can do it. Shit, even ITV - the Lidl of TV channels - can make a professional looking tv show that doesn't appear to have been scripted by slightly fewer than infinite monkeys.
Intergalactic looks about 50% shitter that Red Dwarf did in 1986 and the characters are significantly more one dimensional. It's the sort of appalling dogshit that SyFy would have knocked back and they commissioned Sharknado.
Which is a shame, because there's been some really great female led science fiction over the last few years, like Fringe, killjoys, Orphan Black etc.

Apple+‘s Mosquito Coast is off to an interesting start. I haven’t read the book it’s sorta based on* but I saw the Harrison Ford film version in the 80s and so far the plot is very different, even though the main characters are similar.

        * The book was written by Paul Theroux. The lead role in the show is played by Justin Theroux, the author’s nephew.

Episode 2 of Mare was packed with a lot of twists. I'm surprised by how much unfolded in an hour. Felt like I had watched for a couple hours, but in a good way.

The other night I watched Better Days, which was one of the Oscar nominees for Intentional Film. It's a Chinese film. This one was long enough that I watched across two nights. Excellent cinematography and an interesting twist on a bullying in school story. Definitely not an uplifting film and at times felt very novella/soap operaish given the amount of tears but I thought it was a good film.

Alister Appleton is challenging Portillo in terms of sartorial elegance in today's Escape to the Country. First outfit matched a dark blue shirt, top two buttoned undone, with a vibrant orange cardigan. Undone top and bottom buttons served to draw the viewers eyes to the post-lockdown belly. Second outfit for a visit to a wild flower garden was a royal blue chore jacket with red buttons. How much these outfits were inspired by rural Shropshire I cannot say.

Portillo is on BBC2 in half an hour, we'll have to see if he rises to the challenge.

Following completion of How to Get Away with Murder, the wife and I started Designated Survivor on Saturday - we're 6 episodes in and, as silly as it is, it's quite engaging.

I've also started watching Community when in bed for some light entertainment for an hour or so. It's ok, not rip-roaring funny, but harmless nonetheless.

What's great about it is how it moves it along and isn't really interested in dragging out the mystery because that's not really what the show is about.

                      For example
                      [Spoilers]
The bit about her ex-husband maybe being the father is left as a cliffhanger at the end of episode 2, but then that's addressed fairly quickly in episode 3 - as it would be in real life.

I really hope the Guy Pearce character didn't do it. That would be trite.

But it seems likely now that the church had something to do with it. It was either the cousin priest or, more likely, his boss.

                        The Mitchells vs. the Machines

It's good and very funny. Maybe a touch long, but it's on netflix now and has a great cast. Shout out to Olivia Colman playing the 'baddie' and Mark Mothersbaugh doing another cool soundtrack (along the lines of Thor: Ragnarok)

Yeah, I enjoyed it a fair bit. I do wish they'd done a bit more with the, for want of a better phrase, "off model" animation, like whole scenes in the style of the Good Cop, Dog Cop movie.. Until the end it was used very sparingly and was a bit gimmicky, unlike Into The Spiderverse where it was an integral part of the aesthetic. That said, I quite liked the base animation style too.

I watched owen Jones report on Hartlepool on Owenjones.TV

think it's a pretty good report, with some interesting comments from the Brexit candidate and the independent council leader- get the sense that Jones is more interested inthe people he's interviewing than your average newsnight reporter.

But what I was really thinking was that there's no difference in production values as far as I can see, Fewer graphics, but they were usually irritating- and not so many "interesting" camera angles (ditto) but otherwise very professional. I guess one or two person crew apart from Jones. A lot of good archive material. very well put together.

Mor generally where do you go for news and current affairs? do you still wathc Newsnight/Panorama/Channel 4 News? if not where else?

I thought it was excellent. I suspect it will be a big hit.

I watched the first half of Rose Matafeo's 'Starstruck' series last night and will probably watch the remaining three episodes this evening. The obvious 'Notting Hill' and 'Fleabag' comparisons might be simplistic but are valid and meant as a big compliment.

It's very enjoyable and Matafeo is the same engaging, witty and likable presence she came across as in her 'Horndog' stand up special of last year.

Shirley has a great performance from Elisabeth Moss, it's made me want to read some of Jackson's work now.

Having remained patient with The Handmaid's Tale up to now, ever-faithful of a return to form in the new series, which airs on Irish television tonight. Elizabeth Moss's June becomes ever more annoying in terms of her storyline, but Ann Dowd always gives good value as Aunt Lydia, and the trailers suggest the politics and tensions within Gilead will finally be explored in greater depth than mere dystopia-porn.

I just watched Another Round (with, appropriately, a bottle of very good wine). It's an absolutely fantastic film - thoroughly deserving of its Best International Feature Oscar win. Hugely entertaining, but also moving. If you don't know about it, it's a film where four Danish teachers try and keep their blood alcohol levels high as a sort of experiment. It gets a whole lot of stuff about drinking and drunkenness right. But I think it's really just a very good buddy movie.

If anyone else has seen it, I'd love to know some thoughts.

As teachers, my wife and I definitely had a good chuckle. We quite liked it. I cringe at the thought of it being remade with handsome and beautiful Hollywood actors and actresses.
