Good directors that don't make movies anymore.

Arthur Penn. So, what happened? The Miracle Worker, Mickey One, The Chase, Bonnie & Clyde, The Missouri Breaks. Yes, he had a couple of duff outings but got performances out of a number of actors that they'd never surpass, stand up Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, Dustin Hoffman, Jane Fonda, and damn good ones from some of the best like Brando, Newman and Redford. Hasn't directed a theatrical release in twenty years, now he's a producer on Law & Order. WTF?

I think there's an Arthur Penn retrospective going on at Lincoln Center or some other place in NYC right now. Read something for it at the front of the New Yorker.

And don't forget Little Big Man.

Oh yes, let that one slip somehow, that's the Hoffman performance of course.

I'm glad he's getting some attention again, it almost seems like he's been blacklisted or something.
