The latest in the excellent 'How to invent a country' series on Radio 4. The Alps and how they've shaped Swiss and European history.

Rekindling the spirit of the World Cup with a midweek post-match pod, though, obviously, this was much bigger than the World Cup.
Plus transfers, the league round-up & la Coupe de France.

Oh, I think we did really well. This episode also finds me wandering around the great empty expanses of Kyrgyzstan in the name of the Asian Cup.

Can you let Jimbo know that not only are we still listening, but some of us are actually more interested in stuff like football in Kyrgyzstan than the endless soap opera of the Premier League? Cheers and keep up the good work.

That. I don't listen to the Totally Football Show, because I am not interested enough to listen to a half hour discussion about Chelsea yet a-bloody-gain. They should concentrate on making specialist pods. Had they done a proper Asian Cup one, instead of a token four minutes here or there, I'd definitely be into listening to that (they could have done one reviewing the groups stage and previewing the knockouts, say). I suppose the average punter isn't into the same niche bollocks as I am though and would rather listen to another 20 minutes about whether Liverpool can win the league where they cover the same points as they did with the previous week's discussion about whether Liverpool can win the league, so that's why.

I really like Golazzo because they focus on one main topic from Italian football history and talk about that for a bit, then it's about 10-15 minutes of a current Serie A review/preview.

I don't know if their shows on the Championship/lower leagues and Scotland are also like that, I haven't listened. I could see there being an appeal in a more focused topic, but you run the risk of making it too niche and not having a big enough audience. I do like TFS, though, it's just that I don't get to listen all that often. I really appreciate the schedule in the episode descriptions, though, so I can fast forward to get to something that I am interested in hearing.

                Ooof,,, tough crowd.

The Football League & Scottish shows naturally chipped away the coverage of those leagues from the main show.
Golazzo's set-up is a bit different with the bulk of the show dedicated to something nostalgic, which appeals to all of us Football Italia fans.

As for the main show... I mean, when I am on I do try to bring something a tad random along but I know that I cannot spend 15 minutes on it. I felt that I was sailing close to the wind with the Asian Cup/Kyrgystan stuff but I think I stopped at just the right time and the feedback's been positive, which is nice.

I used to love the Totally Football League Show. Last season it was Macintosh and Stanger, plus a guest. It was always informative and amusing.

Barker heads it now, but that's the only positive really. Clarke and Parkin are dull cliché-spouters. Clarke wishes he was famous enough to do the main show, or something about Arsenal, so I download it, but never find enough time to return to it. I much prefer the NotTheTop20 podcast made by two young guys making their way in the game.

I've not tried the Totally Scottish show, as The Terrace does that more than well enough for me. Any views on those?

Is anyone else listening to 'How To Burn a Million Quid'? The story of Drummond and Cauty, but in dramatic form. I'm two episodes in, and it's fucking awesome. I've just heard excellent impressions of Ken Campbell and John Lydon - much more to come.

What's happened to Iain Macintosh? Seems to have disappeared completely from all podcasts and social media.

He is still the Chief Executive of Muddy Knees Media

He seems to have reduced his “on air” efforts as the company has grown. It is worth noting that Spotify’s recent purchase of Gimlet and Anchor for USD 340 million turned a lot of heads in podcasting.

                          Interesting acquisition, that.

Meanwhile, I'm pretty devastated that Roy Keane Versus, "a podcast series all about one footballer, but he is the most fascinating footballer of his generation", has come to an end after its second series. It's a model podcast I think, discursive and freeform, so that it never seems to even get close to exhausting its subject, but with very clear subjects and questions in mind for each episode. Amazingly entertaining, also.

Macintosh wasn't very popular with the listeners, from what I could tell from *lots* of comments. Never saw one praising him. His "HeeeLLLLLOOOOOO" greeting every time started to seem more and more forced. If he's good with the business side, I think it's a wise decision to stick with that and leave the on-air talent to others.

I liked Macintosh, I guess some could see him as an overly jocular uncle-type but he wasn't bad.

Also, I've listened to a few TFS Scotland episodes, and I liked it although I struggle to maintain interest in Scottish football (very casual Celtic fan). They've done a good job in making the focus not exclusively Old Firm.

I'm a football history junkie so I really enjoy what Golazzo does, and I think that would work pretty well for TFS Scotland. Would I listen to a podcast discuss the Famous Five, Jim McLean or the Quality Street Gang? Hell yes.

Iain really is a doing a lot off air tbf. Ideas to pitch, people to meet, he is busy.
Saw him on Monday and there is an absolutely quality project in the pipeline.

I've been listening to the Conversations strand of the Radio Moments podcast, prompted by a few mentions of the Tommy Boyd episode on Twitter. I've listened to a few now, and diminishing returns are setting in as they tend to follow the same pattern:

Being a fan of radio as a youngster
Getting some lucky break - usually going into an interview one day and presenting the next
A period of success, usually involving some hyperbole ("the switchboard melted", "doubled the audience overnight", "there were 50,000 there and 10,000 stuck in traffic on the motorway", "mobbed wherever I went", "20 million listeners every day")*
The day they got the boot - evidently still bitter about it, despite continually saying they weren't bitter about it
A long period of decline - usually Capital, then provincial commercial radio, then internet radio - surprising how many of them still can't let go and are doing "occasional early breakfast slots on (insert internet station based somewhere like the Isle of Wight).
(Optional)** A bit of a speech about how modern radio is shite and how they could sort it out if they were in charge

*The most hyperbolic so far has been Emperor Rosko who (the actual currencies involved here are vague) reckons he was earning five grand a week on a French station in the late 60s, left after a couple of years with a million in the bank, had one of the first credit cards in the world and had spent a quarter of a million on it before he realised (as he hadn't opened the bills). To be honest it's making me doubt whether he was really an Emperor.
**Bruno Brookes is the opposite, appears to be doing very well managing / training presenters, and running in store radio stations.

To be fair, when it comes to DJs for in-store radio stations, the first name that would spring to mind would be Bruno Brookes.

I just got into "Inside the Comedian" podcast.
David Reed interviews comedians and comedy actors about their careers.
Only the career is completely made up and the comedian has to wing it totally while maintaining the impression that it's a serious interview.

Highlights include Miles Jupp, Justin Edwards, Tom Bell, Kevin Eldon and Bridget Christie.
Some of the guests don't get into it so well, but the ones mentioned above are spectacular, especially Jupp and Eldon (who actually turns the tables on Reed and pushes everything loads further.)

Three seasons of 7 eps each, none more than 25 minutes long.
