I’m following a bunch of YouTube channels and Podcasts about hockey. It’s an interesting offseason.

I like The Hockey Guy. It’s just a regular guy in Abbotsford who owns an impressive hockey sweater collection and is very good at explaining what is going on in the NHL.

I also really like the Steve Dangle Podcast. Three Leafs fans that hate the Leafs.
They also get way into the weeds on teams’ plans and prognosis.

I'd never come across this podcast before. Thanks.

I stumbled across archive.org a while ago, which had a huge repository of radio shows, especially Radio 4. Yesterday, I found a site called fourable.co.uk which turns those archives into podcasts which makes it much easier to listen to them.

Can't recommend it highly enough, and that's my listening sorted for the next few years!

This morning I listened to the new 200% podcast whilst on my run.

                  I highly recommend it.

I was goofing around and fell across this patreon earnings site, which leads me to believe Second Captains is one of the top 20 raisers on patreon for podcasts. Which is kind of bonkers.

That seems to be a top 20 of patron numbers rather than income, but even so they must be absolutely fucking coining it. How many people are involved in SC?

Five core members, with a number of other regular contributors

on their site, they claim to be the world's third most popular podcast on Patreon

That more or less fits with the other list when one takes into account that their minimum level is five euros a month.

And to think, I had mentioned how Chapo Trap House had started a Patreon and Ken messaged me to say that was an interesting idea...

They look to be the second top sports podcast on there. I'm shocked at some of those numbers for other creators. I can't believe that the NBA podcast The Flagrant Ones brings in over $40k a month. Not that it's bad or anything, I'm just really surprised.

It puts the hundred and twenty pounds a month I get from Patreon into some sort of perspective.

The list that caja-dglh links to is very interesting. I'm a Patreon subscriber to You're Wrong About and like that pod a lot. It would be interesting to read something authoritative on the rise of this sort of media, plus Youtubers, etc., and the nature of its independence.

The list is very US centric, which may just reflect Patreon's geographic reach, but makes Second Captains' performance even more notable.

The prominence of "left" politics and "comedy Dungeons and Dragons" shows is also striking

It's not really a podcast, because he just does it on YouTube, but I'm very fond of The Hockey Guy. Multiple times a day, he does a simple, but informative, run down of all the NHL news from his house using just a whiteboard, but the whiteboard is really more for his reference. He also does special ones about particular players, teams, sweaters and his thoughts on running his channel.

He's also provided his whole life story. He's a very hard working guy who has had an impressive collection of astoundingly shitty jobs before he was able to switch to YouTubing full time. His wife and cats sometimes make an appearance. He lives in Abbotsford and has a collection of hockey sweaters and caps that is probably worth more than my house. Hundreds. He wears a different one for each video depending on the topic. He sometimes hosts street hockey meet-ups but they're in BC. Otherwise, I'd stop by. Most of the chatter in the comments is very pleasant and informed, which cannot be said for a lot of hockey video channels.

Also, the 32 Thoughts (formerly 31 Thoughts), Puck Soup, the Athletic's Hockey pod and the Steve Dangle podcast are great.

The pod. World Cup qualifiers, transfers (Salomón Rondón... mmm...) & Spartak horror story time.

Going in-house (ish), the latest Chart Music, featuring a TOTP episode from 2003, hits the spot, not just as a rare foray into this century but also as it dates from a time when this forum existed, and references it, and the social scene that sprung up around a bit in London, with a couple of choice Stay Beautiful anecdotes. Makes you think a lot about how the internet and media have changed since.

That's what I love about them. An episode can take me a week to get through.
