I'm guessing that A in that story is Alex Blumberg, formerly of This American Life, and Planet Money.

Enjoying Alexei Sayle's relatively-new podcast (eight episodes so far, nice and short apart from one 90 minute one with Stewart Lee). He just rambles on, really, about nothing in particular.

But the value, according to the company, was not in my take home pay, but the promise that you would be a part of something greater.
If a friend send that to me I would have told them it was a huge red flag.
There's a fine line between being a team player and a sucker. Actually, the line doesn't seem so fine once you find yourself on the wrong side of it.

I suppose the context is crucial here: a mega-money acquisition by Spotify just round the corner. The podcast industry entering a new and crucial chapter. I can see why this kind of seeming exploitation happened at the time it did.

Ah, I did not know that. Figures.

Of course, we all know that Ken's very sharp; however, when he spotted this, I was properly WOW. Big fan.

"Hegel was a Napoleon superfan. In 1806 he was living at the University of Jena in Germany, putting the finishing touches to The Phenomenology of Spirit when Napoleon won a major victory over the Prussian army just outside the town. In a letter to a friend, an awestruck Hegel described the experience of physically seeing Napoleon ride out from Jena the day before the battle. “I saw the Emperor – this world-soul – riding out of the city on reconnaissance. It is indeed a wonderful sensation to see such an individual, who, concentrated here at a single point, astride a horse, reaches out over the world and masters it . . . this extraordinary man, whom it is impossible not to admire . . . ”

I admit that I missed that the Intertotally Cup had returned. I can't believe you got that Iniesta answer.

Based on recommendations here I’ve listened to a couple of Adam Buxton podcasts and they are very good. His conversation with Stewart Lee from a couple of months ago was really engaging.

When I first started dipping into this thread a couple of years ago I saw a couple of recommendations for the History of English Podcast. When I went to find it on my Podcast Addict app, I accidentally stumbled across the History of Britain Podcast, which similarly is being done by an American academic at exhaustive length. I've listened to some of the early episodes and it's very good, but given the extraordinary depth into which he's going I haven't remotely scratched the surface of it. To give some context, at the end of next month it'll be a full 10 years old and he's been working his way through the Anglo-Saxon period alone since 2014.

The reason I've got around to mentioning this today is that Podcast Addict has just served up a push notification on my phone that legitimately made me go "Oh my god" out loud – because the latest episode has now arrived and it's actually entitled 'The Norman Conquest'. The episode description, in its entirety, simply says "It is finally here."

This is episode #370. On current rate of progress I think he'll catch up with the present day circa 2040.

That looks fascinating on Caliphate, thanks for that.

VA, I'll have to check that History Of Britain podcast. The History of English podcast has finally made it to the Great Vowel Shift. In truth, I feel a bit like Matt Prior after batting for 12 hours to see out a draw in New Zealand, in that it took such a monumental effort to get to this stage, that my listening has dropped sharply off afterwards. I'll have to get back on it.

Yes, I've started History of Britain after seeing VA's post as well, so thanks from me too VA.

A fascinating podcast I've found this week is Time to Eat the Dogs, which is a series about the overlaps between science, history and exploration. So far I've listened to five episodes – the first five available on Spotify, although they're not the earliest episodes overall – including a double header interview with an American chap who, as a student, spent 13 months stationed at the Soviet Antarctic base as part of an exchange of some sort in the early 1960s. Each episode is slightly more than half an hour long, and I have yet to listen to one that wasn't absolutely intriguing. Website here.
