Reed: the gag being that the reason Tristram Shandy (the character) is called Tristram is that the midwife (I think) forgot his father's instructions to call him Tristan. So your misremembering is very meta, like the film (and the book).

Having looked at that list of McLure films, I have to say that I like the sound of 'Hitler Doesn't Live Here Anymore' and of course, 'Suddenly Last Supper'.
