The setting feels more real as well when compared to, say Les Miserables. Both are a million miles away from golden era studio based musicals but Les Mis doesn't feel like it exists in a real place, just very well done sets but the freeway number feels like it's happening in the real world.

I just want to say that everyone should watch Les Demoiselles de Rochefort which also has that feeling.

It felt like an outtake from 'Kids from Fame' for me. I was surprised at how lacklustre that opening set piece number was for me given it had been trumpeted as an epic scene, I'm not sure the film ever really recovered from how underwhelming it was.
