"Happy anniversary, Spock!" " 'Happy', Jim?"

    Star Trek is 50 today.

I still maintain that the worst job on the Enterprise would been whoever had to go in and clean the holodeck. Especially after Commander Riker had been in there.

But that's surely preferable to being a red-shirt in the original series?

Cleaning is a subject that's never properly addressed in sci-fi.

Does Twin Peaks count? Dale Cooper used to ask another character to mind the cherry pie while he went for a shit.

"Chill out guys, it's only the holodeck, It's not like these virtual 1920's Chicago mobsters/Ancient Roman Praetorian Guards/Assassins in the pay of Cardinal Richelieu can actually hurt us."

"Er, Captain, there's been a malfunction of the holodeck software, we can't exit the programme, and could die here"

        "Oh FFS, not again."

To be honest, it's an area where I think people assume not much progress will be made...

If the red-shirts are doing all the cleaning, then it's a better option than being beamed down to some unknown planet, or volunteering to tackle a dangerous alien.
